Source Code for CIA’s Tool to Track Whistleblowers Leaked by Wikileaks

Friday, April 28, 2017 Swati Khandelwal

Wikileaks has just published a new batch of the Vault 7 leak, exposing the documentation and source code for a CIA project known as "Scribbles."

Scribbles, a.k.a. the "Snowden Stopper," is a piece of software allegedly designed to embed 'web beacon' tags into confidential documents, allowing the spying agency to track whistleblowers and foreign spies.

Since March, as part of its "Vault 7" series, the Whistleblowing website has published thousands of documents and other confidential information that the whistleblower group claims came from the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

The CIA itself described Scribbles as a "batch processing tool for pre-generating watermarks and inserting those watermarks into documents that are apparently being stolen by FIO (foreign intelligence officers) actors."

Here's How Scribbles Tool Works:
Scribbles is coded in C# programming language and generates a random watermark for each document, inserts it into the document, saves all processed documents in an output directory, and creates a log file that identifies the watermarks inserted into every document.

This technique works exactly in the same way as the "tracking pixel" works, where a tiny pixel-sized image is embedded inside an email, allowing marketers and companies to keep track of how many users have seen the advertisement.

Using this tool CIA inserts a tiny uniquely generated file, hosted on a CIA-controlled server, to the classified documents "likely to be stolen."

So, every time the watermarked document is accessed by anyone, including potential whistleblowers, it will secretly load an embedded file in the background, which creates an entry on the CIA's server, containing unique information about the one who accessed it, including the time stamp and his/her IP address.

"It generates a random watermark for each document, inserts that watermark into the document, saves all such processed documents in an output directory, and creates a log file which identifies the watermarks inserted into each document," Scribbles' user guide manual reads.

Scribbles Only Works with Microsoft Office Products
The user manual also specifies that the tool is intended for off-line preprocessing of Microsoft Office documents. So, if the watermarked documents are opened in any other application like OpenOffice or LibreOffice, they may reveal watermarks and URLs to the user.

According to the documentation, "the Scribbles document watermarking tool has been successfully tested on…Microsoft Office 2013 (on Windows 8.1 x64), documents from Office versions 97–2016 (Office 95 documents will not work!) [and]...documents that are not be locked forms, encrypted, or password-protected."However, since the hidden watermarks are loaded from a remote server, this technique should work only when the user accessing the marked documents is connected to the Internet.

WikiLeaks notes that the latest released version of Scribbles (v1.0 RC1) dated March 1, 2016, which indicates it was in use up until at least last year and seemingly meant to remain classified until 2066.

More technical details of Scribble can be found in the User Guide.

So far, Wikileaks has revealed the "Year Zero" batch which uncovered CIA hacking exploits for popular hardware and software, the "Dark Matter" batch which focused on hacking exploits the agency designed to target iPhones and Macs, the "Marble" batch, and the "Grasshopper" batch that reveal a framework, allowing the agency to easily create custom malware for breaking into Microsoft's Windows and bypassing antivirus protection.

Android has overtaken Windows as the most used operating system on the internet

Android has overtaken Windows as the most used operating system on the internet

For years the tech industry has believed in the dominance of the almighty Microsoft Windows. Windows is one of the most used operating system in the desktop space with more than 90.45 percent of devices powered by the operating system according to data by NetMarketShare.
However, according to a recent report by StatCounter, Android has dethroned Microsoft Windows as the most popular operating system (OS) for internet usage across product segments such as desktop, tablets, laptops and mobile devices.
The interesting thing is that Android overtook Windows last month with internet usage market share across the world at 37.93 percent in comparison to the 37.91 percent usage on Windows OS.
Aodhan Cullen, the CEO of StatCounter termed this to be a “milestone in technology history” and “the end of an era.” He goes on to say that, “It marks the end of Microsoft’s leadership worldwide of the OS market which it has held since the 1980s.”
This statement might not hold true entirely since we are only talking about the OS preferred to access the internet. Windows is the preferred choice for desktops. But the results do point to a definite trend in the market where PCs are observing a continuous decline in overall market share when compared to mobile devices.
The report notes that Windows holds about 84 percent internet usage market share in the desktop market which includes PC and laptops.
Cullen correctly points out, “Windows won the desktop war but the battlefield has moved on.” Windows 10 Mobile OS is nowhere close to be competitve. It has a minuscule 0.3 percent market share as compared to over 80 percent of Android market share. There is no way Windows is making any inroads in the mobile sector.
One interesting thing to note here is that Windows has maintained its lead in North America and Europe with 39.5 percent and 51.7 percent internet usage market share while Android held around 21.2 percent and 23.6 market share respectively.
Asia was the deciding factor to give Android a marginal bump by holding 52.2 percent as Windows slumped to 29.2 percentage. The reason for Asia being so contrasting in terms of market share can be because of the fact that most people would opt to choose a smartphone rather going for a PC or a laptop.

Microsoft is now selling Surface Hub as a service, and has introduced a try before you buy option

Microsoft is now selling Surface Hub as a service, and has introduced a try before you buy option

By
In the nine months since the Surface Hub has launched, 2,000 customers have ordered the device in 24 markets. Each order ranged from one to 1,500 units, and Microsoft is gearing up for 2017 by introducing new ways to purchase the device, considering the strong demand for the product.
A survey by IDC shows that 73 percent of businesses hope to move to a subscription based model for IT procurement over the next three years. Customers in the UK will be able to get Surface Hubs soon from Microsoft’s partner, Maverick. There are twenty six partners spread across Europe, Asia, US, Canada and the UK. Microsoft is also launching the Surface Hub Value Added Distributors Program for Opportunity Resellers (VAD-OR) program, to allow Surface Hub distributors to deliver the same quality of service to opportunity resellers.
Jon Sidwick, VP of Maverick Europe, says, “This service is a real channel game changer for the collaboration market. Many companies offer various forms of leasing; our process will be far more sophisticated and accessible. We will be kicking off this service in partnership with Microsoft this year on a country by country basis to offer Surface Hub as a Service. This will enable resellers to access a subscription model then only have the Hub in place for as long as they need. The successful implementation of this type of program will create a far quicker sales cycle with more sophisticated solutions.”
Additionally, the Surface Hub will also be available as a try and buy product in certain markets through select retailers. Customers will be able to use a Surface hub for 30 days before placing an order. The program is intended for enterprise clients to try out a device before placing large orders.

App Review: Enpass, an extremely versatile password manager with extensive cross-platform support

password manager apps reviews
password manager apps

By Rehan Hooda / 03 Dec 2016 , 11:05

Mobile apps are the cornerstone of the smartphone experience, regardless of the platform that one may use. There has been a lot of talk about the whole moving away from apps to services model with the focus on different type of interactions with machines, AI and services with the imminent arrival of bots. But, bots and the full AI experience as portrayed by HAL 9000 in Space Odyssey or Jarvis in Iron Man still seems a distant dream. Apps, manual input of content and effort will still be around until AI services are improved and self-contained with privacy instead of current ‘need to send everything to a server to make sense.’
Cybersecurity1
To begin with, a lot of development has been happening around cyber security. Specially with demonetisation and lot of people moving online for their banking needs, the need to have secure passwords is pertinent. We have seen that despite numerous reports, instructions and advice by experts and services about the need to create a solid password, majority of the passwords are either ‘Password’ or ‘12345’. Thankfully most services which value consumer data security and privacy have mandatory instructions about the number of lower case characters, upper case characters, numbers and special characters should be added to a password.

As the number of digital services increase, the number of passwords and sensitive details like the backup security answers or password recovery code needs to be store also increases. Which the increasing amount of data, the need for password wallets or password managers is paramount. Enpass comes to fit the space brilliantly well.
I have been using the app since last 2-3 years and have seen it all, right from rebranding of the UI to republishing the Android app. Enpass is brilliant in every way and has grown with each update. The app is available on a wide range of platforms including iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows UWP, MacOS, Windows PC, Linux and Chromebook along with a portable pen drive version. The company has also added support for Android Watch and it can be enabled in the Android Watch menu under settings in the Android app.
The app is free to download, however, the mobile apps, for iOS, Android and Blackberry, the company has put a restriction on the number of saved passwords that one can see. The free mobile version of the app only allows users to use and see 20 passwords in your database and beyond that you will need to purchase the app.
Enpass Password Manager Setup
Enpass includes a powerful password generator which lets you generate passwords and save them. It also allows you to tweak the ‘Recipe’ of the password to add in digits, symbols and characters. The app developer has added fingerprint API support for Android and TouchID support for iOS along with an Enpass keyboard for Android where you can authenticate and enter login details in any app using the autofill of the keyboard. Also, the company has added ‘tap to enter login details’ in the app. This feature dubbed as ‘Enpass Autofill Service’ uses the Android Accessibility feature and gives you a ‘Tap to fill’ notification in the notification drawer.
Enpass Password Manager Setup
While adding a new password, it will ask you to select the category of the password where the app provides a template for the data that you can store. You can change the icon of the password to match your service and also add new Field or reorder fields according to your preference.
The exception system of the app is a combination of open source and proprietary code to maximize the security. AES-256 is an industrial standard used by military and 24,000 rounds of PBKDF2 provides users advanced protection against brute force and side channel attacks.
Enpass Password Manager Setup
The app comes with a built-in browser where you can browse the web and Enpass takes care of all the passwords you will use on the internet. The app gives the option to change the User Agent String in the app along with the search engine of the browser. You can open the app and copy passwords and paste them on other apps, but also adds an option to clear the clipboard after specified time.
Enpass Password Manager Setup
Security and Browser options in Settings menu
The most important feature of the app and which I love is the app gives you an option to store the data file on the cloud service of your liking and nothing is stored on Enpass servers. All the data is encrypted with 256-bit AES encryption with 24,000 rounds of PBKDF2 and open-source SQLCipher encryption engine. You can store it on your Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Box, Folder or WebDAV or ownCloud. Before you start, you are required to set a Master Password which will be used to unlock the encrypted data file. Once set and running, you can set a pin code or fingerprint under the security section.
Even though the app is overall solid and the developer issues updated regularly to introduce new features and fix bugs, I wish that the Enpass Keyboard experience is improved to ensure that one doesn’t have to authenticate the app 2-3 times to enter two simple details.
Enpass Password Manager Setup
Restoring data after Install
Another important feature is the option to backup as well as restore the data over Wi-Fi, which means you can keep the data on a secure pen drive or hard drive and restore and backup the new passwords to the database to external storage or a secure private Wi-Fi. The app is free on desktop and costs $9.99 per platform and I have purchased it on all the mobile platforms that I use. Though $9.99 is slightly on steep side, the amount of functionality offered by the app does complete justice to the pricing.
Do let us know any apps worth recommending in the comments section below.

Your Headphones Can Spy On You — Even If You Have Disabled Microphone

Headphones
 Headphones mic

Wednesday, November 23, 2016 Swati Khandelwal

Have you considered the possibility that someone could be watching you through your webcam? Or Listening to all your conversations through your laptop’s microphone?

Even a bit of thought about this probability could make you feel incredibly creepy.

But most people think that they have a solution to these major issues i.e. simply covering their laptop’s webcam and microphone with tape, just like Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and FBI Director James Comey.

But it's 2016, and a piece of tape won't help you, as a new experiment has proved that how easily hackers can turn your headphones into a microphone to spy on all your conversations in the background without your knowledge.

A group of Israeli security researchers at Ben Gurion University have created a proof-of-concept code (malware) that converts typical headphones into microphones and then use them to record all your conversations in the room just like a fully-featured spying device.

Speake(a)r Malware Weaponizes Headphones and Speakers
Using headphones as microphones is a decade-old technique. There are many videos available on YouTube, which show that earbuds can function as microphones in a pinch.

But what the researchers managed to do is switching an output channel of the audio card on your laptop — running either Windows or Mac OS — to an input signal and then recording the sound without any dedicated microphone channel from as far as 20 feet away.

Dubbed "Speake(a)r," the malicious code (malware) is disturbingly able to hijack a computer to record audio even when its microphone is disabled or completely disconnected from the computer.

"People don’t think about this privacy vulnerability," says lead researcher Mordechai Guri told Wired. "Even if you remove your computer’s microphone, if you use headphones you can be recorded."Speake(a)r actually utilizes the existing headphones to capture vibrations in the air, converts them to electromagnetic signals, alters the internal functions of audio jacks, and then flips input jacks (used by microphones) to output jacks (used for speakers and headphones).

This allows a hacker to record audio, though at a lower quality, from computers with disabled or no microphone or from computers of a paranoid user, who has intentionally ved any existing audio components.

But What made this Hack Possible?
Thanks to a little-known feature of Realtek audio codec chips that actually "retask" the computer's output channel as an input channel silently.
This makes it possible for the researchers' malware to record audio even when the earbuds is connected into an output-only jack and do not even have a microphone channel on their plug.

What's even worse? Since RealTek chips are being used on the majority of systems these days, the Speake(a)r attack works on practically any computer, running Windows or MacOS, and most laptops, as well, leaving most computers vulnerable to such attacks.

"This is the real vulnerability," said Guri. "It’s what makes almost every computer today vulnerable to this type of attack."The feature of RealTek audio codec chips is truly dangerous, as it can not be easily fixed. The only way to deal with this issue is to redesign and replace the chip in current as well as future computers, which is impractical.

Security researchers also published a YouTube video which shows the Speake(a)r eavesdropping attack in work.

For more detailed and technical explanation of the Speake(a)r attack, you can head on to the research paper [PDF] titled "Speake(a)r: Turn Speakers to Microphones for Fun and Profit."

Google discloses critical security vulnerability in Windows

Google discloses critical security vulnerability in Windows

Representational Image: Reuters
By
Two Google employees working for the Threat Analysis Group have publicly disclosed a critical Microsoft Windows vulnerability. The privilege escalation bug can allow malicious attackers to bypass security sandboxes and gain control of a system. Google has information that the vulnerability is being actively used by miscreants, and have announced the vulnerability so that users can take measures to protect themselves.
The vulnerability was reported to Adobe and Microsoft engineers on 21 October. On 26 October, Adobe released a security update after working closely with the Google Threat Analysis Group. Adobe Flash Player was affected by the vulnerability, and the security patchprevents attackers from gaining control of the system. However, Microsoft has neither released a security patch, nor issued an advisory to its users.
This is a class of exploits known as zero day exploits. These are previously unknown vulnerabilities, that have not been identified yet as an issue, and which the company is not currently patching. Google allows itself and other companies seven days to either patch or notify users of a critically vulnerable zero day exploits. These are vulnerabilities which leaves a large number of users exposed, with the chances of exploitation increasing on a daily basis. Google is publicly announcing the vulnerability, according to the guidelines laid down in the critical vulnerability policy of Google.
To avoid being affected by the vulnerability, users are advised to upgrade to the latest version of Adobe Flash player, if automatic updates are not enabled. Users of Microsoft Windows have to wait till Microsoft itself releases a security patch. Users are advised to install the Windows update and the Microsoft update when they come available.

How to use BestCrypt to encrypt files and folders

By Jack Wallen | October 5, 2016, 9:59 AM PST
Jack Wallen walks you through the steps of creating and moving a container to illustrate how amazingly easy BestCrypt Container Encryption is.

The needs for secure document/data storage are at an all-time high. This means more and more people are turning to encryption. To many, however, the idea of using some cumbersome, complex command line tool is beyond their scope of abilities. That's why having well thought out GUI tools for the task of encryption is important.

Recently, the BestCrypt Container Encryptiontool crossed my desk and immediately looked like just the tool for the job. BestCrypt is a cross-platform (Linux, Mac, Windows) that includes features like:
Store and Access Encrypted Files
Create and Manage Multiple encrypted Containers
Mount Encrypted Drive(s) as a Subfolder
Define permissions in a Multi-user Environment
Dynamic Containers
Move Containers across platforms

Although BestCrypt isn't open source, it works splendidly on Linux. What's most impressive about BestCrypt is that all of these features are rolled into a very easy to use GUI, that any level of user could immediately get up to speed on.

Let's install BestCrypt and use it to encrypt our first Container.

Switching Windows 10 Mobile from 32 bit to 64 bit is inevitable as memory capacity in smartphones goes up, Microsoft says.

There's a lot to like in Microsoft's Windows 10 Mobile for smartphones, but it has one glaring weakness: It still is a 32-bit OS.

But a transition to 64-bit for the OS was inevitable as memory capacity in smartphones goes up, Microsoft said during a presentation at the Ignite conference last week.

Windows 10 Mobile lags behind Apple's iOS and Google's Android, which transitioned to 64 bits a few years ago. Many new Windows phones already have 64-bit ARM-based Qualcomm processors, but the OS still runs as 32 bit.

Thirty-two bits is "not really a limitation for us since the devices are all 4GB [of RAM] or less. But that will change over the next couple of years," said Jason Whitehorn, partner software engineer manager of the Windows and Devices Group at Microsoft.

The company is "very aware of" the impending transition and recognizes the importance of 64-bit, Whitehorn said.

Smartphones with a 32-bit system have a ceiling of 4GB of RAM and need a 64-bit OS to tack on more memory.

Whitehorn didn't provide an exact date for the transition to Windows 10 Mobile to 64-bit. But it'll likely happen soon because handsets like Samsung's Android-based Galaxy Note 7 already exceed 4GB of RAM. Also, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 chips -- which are compatible with Windows 10 Mobile -- support the latest low-power DDR4 memory and are better equipped to handle 64-bit apps.

Mobile devices are getting more memory and storage to handle demanding applications, graphics, and 4K video. Some Windows 10 Mobile handsets also

How to Emulate a Commodore Amiga on Your PC

Retro games remain surprisingly popular, with websites and even magazines dedicated to their continued appreciation. One perennially popular system is the Commodore Amiga, a desktop computer with surprising graphics ability and a desktop environment.
A passionate user base persists to this day, and the Amiga OS exists as a Linux-esque alternative to Windows (and can be run on the Raspberry Pi).5 Retro Operating Systems You Can Revisit with Ease on Linux 5 Retro Operating Systems You Can Revisit with Ease on LinuxYou probably already know you can play old games on your Linux device, thanks to emulator collections like MAME, but did you know that various emulators are available for running full applications? Amiga Emulation on PC

However, whether you’re running an emulator on your Windows, Mac, or Linux desktop (or even mobile device), continued use of the Amiga platform depends upon you loading up an emulator. From here, a disk image should be loaded at the Kickstart prompt.
Fortunately, various emulator solutions are readily available.

Emulating the Amiga on Windows, Linux, and Mac

You’ll find an emulator suitable for playing Amiga game ROMs (and app ROMs, too) on almost all currently-popular platforms. We’re going to show you two in particular, one for Windows, and another for Android.
Once you’re running an emulator, you’ll need some games to play. As with any copyrighted material, you’ll need to own a copy of a game to be able to legally play it. If you need some ideas, our list of the top 10 Amiga games should help, and these can be found in the usual ROM repositories. Once downloaded, they’re easily installed on your Amiga emulator.10 Amiga Games You Should Play With an Emulator 10 Amiga Games You Should Play With an EmulatorThe Commodore Amiga is one of the most important consoles of the 16-bit era. Choose Your Emulator

Your best choice for an Amiga emulator can be found at fs-uae.net/download, home of the FS-UAE Amiga emulator. While the emulator is available for Windows, Mac, and various Linux distros (evenSteamOS!), we’re looking at the Windows version.
Amiga Emulation Configuration
After downloading and installing the emulator, run FS-UAE Launcher. The launcher is arranged into eight tabs, which you use to configure your Amiga emulation. On the first tab, select the appropriate Amiga model for the game you wish to play. You can choose from the original Amiga 1000 all the way through to the CD32 and CDTV. Note that you can also quickly load up a game ROM here, as well as configure a controller.
You’ll also need to choose a Kickstart ROM. Kickstart was the bootstrapping firmware that prepared the Amiga for running software from an inserted diskette. Various versions of Kickstart were issued.
Amiga Emulation Kickstart
With FS-UAE, you can use the default replacement Kickstart ROM, which was originally developed for the AROS project. But if you have Kickstart ROMs on disk, you can import these. You’ll find the controls for selecting a Kickstart ROM across the bottom of the emulator window. Find out more about Kickstart ROMs at www.amigaroms.net.

Loading a Game ROM

Loading up a game (or app) can be done from the first screen, where there are slots for two floppy disk ROMs. If you have a CD-ROM based ROM, you’ll be able to load this up from the CD-ROM Drives tab. Similarly, there is also a Hard Drives tab, which you can use to configure a directory on your PC to he used as a HDD. Finally, if the title is across several disk images, you can use the Floppy Drives tab to load up the disks.
Amiga Emulation Disks
With your ROM in place, it’s time to click Start. The FS-UAE emulator will play rattling disk-reading sound FX, presumably recorded from a genuine Amiga, and the game will launch.
Load issues can be resolved by tweaking the configuration; perhaps adding memory, or using a genuine Kickstart ROM. The Additional configuration screen (the right-most tab) should help you out here.

  1. Increase the available RAM to the emulated Amiga from the default 512 KB to 1.5 MB.
  2. Use the Kickstart 1.3 ROM.
If you’re having problems, find an image of the original box online (use Google images) to check the system requirements. While most games will run on Kickstart 1.3 with 1 MB of RAM, this isn’t always the case.

How to Emulate an Amiga on Android

Even simpler to set up is the emulation of an Amiga computer on your Android smartphone or tablet (or even TV box).
