Mark Zuckerberg talks of using Facebook to transform the world in his ideologically charged treatise

By
“Are we building the world we all want?” That’s the question Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is asking us in his treatise titled ‘Building Global Community.’
Addressed to the community, the entire 6,000 word manifesto talks about Zuckerberg’s plan of transforming Facebook into supportive, safe, informed, civically-engaged and inclusive, global community. He talks about history bringing people together, of building social infrastructure to “empower us to achieve things we couldn’t do on our own.”
He says, “Our greatest challenges need a global response” and that, “Progress now requires humanity coming together not just as cities or nations, but also as a global community.”
That community, Zuckerberg believes, is Facebook. He states that Facebook has so far focussed on connecting friends and families, but that now, it will focus on “developing the social infrastructure of community.” He adds that Facebook is a work in progress, that learning and improving is simply a part of the culture.
To achieve this, Zuckerberg will now align Facebook around the building of communities. Communities that are “supportive safe, informed, civically engaged and inclusive.”
Zuckerberg intends to build an idealistic world, and to that end, I’m very much in favour of his vision. However, I don’t trust Facebook to actually take responsibility for doing the right thing.
Facebook is a company, not an NGO
Facebook is a company first, a community leader only incidentally. As a company it’s built around only one concept, making profits. It will work for the greater good of the community only if that work translates to the greater good of Facebook’s shareholders.

While Zuckerberg’s mission statement paints a pretty picture, we must not forget that it’s Facebook’s actions up till now that have led to the rise of Trump, the proliferation of fake news at a global scale and the filter bubbles that Facebook’s algorithms encouraged, however unintentional those actions were.
As Medium’s Frederic Filloux so eloquently explains in a blog post, “Facebook is above all an advertising machine. A fantastic one.”
He explains that Facebook’s revenue system is built around page views and sharing and that, “Sharing is key because it leads to higher page consumption which, in turn, leads to multiple bespoke advertising exposures.”
To achieve this, Facebook’s algorithms fine-tune what you see based on your interests. Facebook ensures that you stay in a comfort zone that it’s algorithms build for you. You will not be shown posts that are contrary to what Facebook’s algorithms determine are your beliefs.
In other words, you will not be shown posts that you wouldn’t “like”.
Facebook created the ultimate filter bubble
It’s not that we’re intentionally saying that we don’t want to see the real world. Facebook determined that it didn’t want to show us the bigger picture. We weren’t really given a choice in the matter. Facebook is indirectly shaping our thoughts.
I’m not accusing Facebook of deliberately bringing Trump to power or encouraging fake news. No, Facebook did none of those things. However, Facebook has left us at the mercy of Zuckerberg’s view of the world.

As Adam Mosseri, VP of Product Management for News Feed himself said, “We are in the business of connecting people and ideas — and matching people with the stories they find most meaningful.” He’s oblivious of the fact that he is, in effect, describing a filter bubble.
Filter bubbles are bad because they isolate us in our own cultural and ideological bubbles.
“Facebook is also incredibly effective at weakening the norms that hold real-world communities together,” says Wired.
Fake News and community responsibility are only a problem now because Donald Trump is in power. If Hillary Clinton was president, we wouldn’t have heard a peep from Facebook.
Filloux says it best when he says, “Facebook will solve just enough of the fake news to put down the raging PR fire. But the company will never jeopardise its money machine for the sake of mere societal considerations.”
So what’s Zuckerberg’s plan?
Facebook has always been a bunch of fractured, isolated communities that reside on a common platform. While Facebook encourages interaction with friends and family, it has so far actively discouraged interaction between rival communities.
Zuckerberg wants to fix this and he wants to start by bringing people from like-minded communities together and improve discourse.
“Research suggests the best solutions for improving discourse may come from getting to know each other as whole people instead of just opinions,” writes Zuckerberg.

The plan is to bring diverse communities together, not on ideology, but on interests. Cricket fans and football fans coming together with other sports communities, for example. Zuckerberg wants to build a platform that will enable better communication among these communities so people will get to know each other. These platforms will then be used to encourage discourse on topics that matter. This includes civic responsibility, being more inclusive, etc.
Fighting fake news is also a big concern. For a start, Facebook will start using a combination of big data, AI and human curation to cut down on sensationalist stories. It’s easy to determine sensationalist stories, writes Zuckerberg, because people usually share the headlines without reading the content.
If people read the content and share it, such a story, and its publisher, will be ranked higher than one that’s shared without reading.

Huawei runs past Oppo and Vivo in smartphone shipments in Q4 of 2016 in China

Huawei runs past Oppo and Vivo in smartphone shipments in Q4 of 2016 in China

China shipped 131.6 million smartphones in in the fourth quarter of 2016 with Huawei topping the list, followed by Oppo and Vivo, a new report said on Saturday. According to a report by Singapore-based market research firm Canalys, the smartphone shipments in China accounted for nearly a third of worldwide shipments.
“Smartphone shipments in China for the fourth quarter of 2016 were also the quarterly highest in the history. Shipments for all of the year came to 476.5 million units, rising 11.4 percent from 2015 levels,” Digitimes reported, quoting Canalys report. Huawei shipped 76.2 million units in China’s smartphone market in 2016, followed by Oppo with 73.2 million units and Vivo with 63.2 million.
“In 2016, the top three brands were competing with new product launches, go-to-market strategies and brand building,” Canalys research analyst Jessie Ding was quoted as saying. Xiaomi took the fourth spot while Apple fell to fifth place.
“In 2017, competition between Huawei, Oppo and Vivo will become much more intense, while their increasing scale and bargaining power within the industry will have a larger impact on device strategies of operators and open channel partners,” Ding predicted. This comes right after the reports that Xiaomi is facing some problems in the Chinese market and Oppo, Vivo and Huawei are pushing up with innovation.

FBI starts three probes in suspected Russian hacking of U.S presidential elections

FBI starts three probes in suspected Russian hacking of U.S presidential elections

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation is pursuing at least three separate probes relating to alleged Russian hacking of the U.S. presidential elections, according to five current and former government officials with direct knowledge of the situation. While the fact that the FBI is investigating had been reported previously by the New York Times and other media, these officials shed new light on both the precise number of inquires and their focus.
The FBI’s Pittsburgh field office, which runs many cyber security investigations, is trying to identify the people behind breaches of the Democratic National Committee’s computer systems, the officials said. Those breaches, in 2015 and the first half of 2016, exposed the internal communications of party officials as the Democratic nominating convention got underway and helped undermine support for Hillary Clinton.
The Pittsburgh case has progressed furthest, but Justice Department officials in Washington believe there is not enough clear evidence yet for an indictment, two of the sources said. Meanwhile the bureau’s San Francisco office is trying to identify the people who called themselves “Guccifer 2” and posted emails stolen from Clinton campaign manager John Podesta’s account, the sources said. Those emails contained details about fundraising by the Clinton Foundation and other topics.
Beyond the two FBI field offices, FBI counterintelligence agents based in Washington are pursuing leads from informants and foreign communications intercepts, two of the people said. This counterintelligence inquiry includes but is not limited to examination of financial transactions by Russian individuals and companies who are believed to have links to Trump associates. The transactions under scrutiny involve investments by Russians in overseas entities that appear to have been undertaken through middlemen and front companies, two people briefed on the probe said.
Reuters could not confirm which entities and individuals were under scrutiny. Scott Smith, the FBI’s new assistant director for cyber crime, declined to comment this week on which FBI offices were doing what or how far they had progressed. The White House had no comment on Friday on the Russian hacking investigations. A spokesman pointed to a comment Trump made during the campaign, in which he said: “As far as hacking, I think it was Russia, but I think we also get hacked by other countries and other people.”
During a news conference Thursday, President Donald Trump said he had no business connections to Russia. The people who spoke to Reuters also corroborated a Tuesday New York Times report that Americans with ties to Trump or his campaign had repeated contacts with current and former Russian intelligence officers before the November election. Those alleged contacts are among the topics of the FBI counterintelligence investigation.

Researchers develop method to wirelessly charge several cellphones simultaneously

Researchers develop method to wirelessly charge several cellphones simultaneously

By
If you thought wireless charging in smartphones was a new thing, you are mistaken as researchers have found a new method to power devices without connecting them to cords.
The new method developed by Disney Research, published in the journal PLOS ONE, for wirelessly transmitting power throughout a room enables users to charge electronic devices as seamlessly as they now connect to WiFi hotspots.
The researchers demonstrated their method, called quasistatic cavity resonance (QSCR), inside a specially built 16-by-16-foot room at their lab.
They safely generated near-field standing magnetic waves that filled the interior of the room, making it possible to power several cellphones, fans and lights simultaneously.
“This new innovative method will make it possible for electrical power to become as ubiquitous as WiFi,” said Alanson Sample, associate lab director and principal research scientist at Disney Research.
“This in turn could enable new applications for robots and other small mobile devices by eliminating the need to replace batteries and wires for charging,” added Sample.
According to Sample, wireless power transmission is a long-standing technological dream.
“In this work, we’ve demonstrated room-scale wireless power, but there’s no reason we couldn’t scale this down to the size of a toy chest or up to the size of a warehouse,” Sample noted.
The QSCR method involves inducing electrical currents in the metalised walls, floor and ceiling of a room, which in turn generate uniform magnetic fields that permeate the room’s interior.
This enables power to be transmitted efficiently to receiving coils that operate at the same resonant frequency as the magnetic fields.
The induced currents in the structure are channelled through discrete capacitors, which isolate potentially harmful electrical fields.
“Our simulations show we can transmit 1.9 kilowatts of power while meeting federal safety guidelines,” Chabalko said, adding that this was equivalent to simultaneously charging 320 smartphones.

ZUK Edge II could be announced with a curved display and dual-camera setup

ZUK Edge II could be announced with a curved display and dual-camera setup

By
If you remember Lenovo’s sub-brand ZUK announced the ZUK Edge in China back in December. It has just been a couple of months and it seems that a successor to the smartphone is already in place, well atleast a special edition.
A few alleged images of the ZUK Edge II including a special edition dedicated to Luo Tianyi, a Vocaloid character popular in China, have emerged. As you can see the special edition comes in a distinctive blue shade while the regular Edge II could be offered in black. Also, this model actually has a curved display unlike the ZUK Edge which had a flat panel.

Rumour has it that Huawei’s Honor 8 Pro will make its debut at the Mobile World Congress 2017 (MWC) event in Barcelona, Spain, this month.
The Honor 8 is available in India and globally. It’s pricing in India places it in direct competition with the OnePlus 3. The Honor 8 Pro is expected to be a premium variant of the existing Honor 8, reports Android Headlines.
The report also adds the that Honor 8 Pro is likely to be the Chinese Honor V9. The V9 was recently spotted on Chinese telecom certification site, TENAA.
The V9, and consequently the Honor 8 Pro, is expected to come with a 5.7-inch QHD display (2560 x 1440), offer 4GB or 6GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of storage. The SoC is expected to be a 2.4GHz octa-core unit, but its exact details are unknown. This is likely a variant of the MediaTek Helio architecture. The battery is thought to be a 3,900 mAh unit.
On the camera front we’re expecting to see a 12MP rear camera placed alongside a secondary 12MP camera. The details of the configuration of the cameras is unknown. Huawei’s earlier dual-camera phones, designed in partnership with Leica, placed a colour sensor alongside a dedicated black and white one to enhance image quality.
The front unit is expected to be an 8MP one.
Details of pricing, colours and availability are unknown at this time.
