If you need to easily work with documents locally and in the cloud on your Chromebook, see how to do so with a Google Play supported device, WPS Office, and Dropbox.
For some users, the Chromebook isn't an option because they believe it exists entirely in the cloud. With the latest iteration of Chrome OS (on certain devices), that has become a completely outmoded idea. Now that Google is rolling out Android app support for more and more Chromebooks, it is absolutely possible to take the devices back from the cloud and work locally. Although it is has been possible to achieve this from the start by working offline, people weren't happy until they had their hands on a standard locally-running/saving app.
That time has come. Now that you can run Android apps on Chrome OS, the likes of WPS Office can be added to the Chrome OS arsenal of productivity apps. The best part is you can link WPS Office to your Dropbox account and work both out of and in the cloud. Let's install WPS Office and

Google’s big October event is just hours away, and there are expected to be a number of major announcements. We might be on the verge of an extraordinary push into Hardware by Google, especially considering the event url is called Made by Google. The biggest announcement is expected to be the launch of two new high end Android handsets, that will let Google compete directly with Apple. There are further announcements expected for Google Home, Allo, the Daydream platform, and Chromecast. This is going to be an exciting confluence of hardware, artificial intelligence and virtual reality.
Pixel and Pixel XLThere were reports as far back as June that Google was in talks with hardware manufacturers to release in house devices. Two new smartphones from Google are expected to be launched at the event, and they seem to be positioned as the direct competition to the Apple iPhone 7 and the Apple iPhone 7 Plus. They are premium smartphones, with high end specifications, with custom software, and Google Assistant baked right in, to take on Siri. The Pixel phones are expected to come with unlimited cloud storage for photos and videos, that too in the original resolution. This is an attractive feature that will heavily convenience users, as they can easily forget about managing photos and let Google do all the hard work.
The Pixel Xl and the Pixel
The Pixel reportedly sports a 5.2-inch screen, whereas the slightly larger Pixel XL is expected to have a 5.5-inch screen. Google finally stepping in to take on Apple products, comes towards the end of a year with a number of premium smartphones launches, including the OnePlus 3, LG G5, Huawei P9, the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, and the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. While still a niche category in India, there is
If you've been wondering how to enable the Google Play Store on a supported Chromebook device, Jack Wallen shows you how.
You've heard plenty about Chrome OS running Android apps. You may have even witnessed images of various Android apps running on a Chromebook. But chances are, you've yet to read about how to actually make it work. I happen to be lucky enough to own one of the currently supported Chromebook devices (Pixel 2) that supports the installation of Android apps. I have to tell you, this new feature brings a whole new level of productivity to the Chromebook. Not only can you easily extend the feature set of your device, you can handle productivity in ways you might not have otherwise enjoyed.
The only caveat (besides having to have one of the few select supported devices), is that installing Android apps isn't as simple as heading over to the Google Play Store and clicking Install on the apps you want. First off, you have to have the latest build of Chrome OS (build 53 or newer, with
checked out of the library. However, all is not lost if you find yourself in this situation — an app called OverDrive might be able to help you out.
Download the app and link it with your library card to gain access to a collection of thousands of eBooks. While some of the texts that you need won’t be available via OverDrive, it’s definitely worth having installed on one of your devices just in case.
In development over the past quarter of a century, WolframAlpha has been compared to the ultra-smart computers used on Star Trek. The app puts a wealth of knowledge in the palm of your hand, answering questions ranging from “what is the capital of Peru?W to “how many meters are in a mile?”
WolframAlpha is an app that everyone should have access to — but if you’re a student, you’re sure to find it useful sooner rather than later.
Regardless of what courses you’re taking, it’s well worth having Microsoft Office (CA, UK) at your disposal. Word will help you produce essays with pristine citations, Excel is great whether you’re studying maths or just in need of an organizational spreadsheet, and PowerPoint should be the first port of call if you need to deliver a presentation to your classmates.
Of course, a subscription that costs $99 per year might not fit into the budget of every student. Fortunately, Google Docs is an excellent, free replacement for anyone that wants to keep their spending to a minimum. There are also several ways to get a free version of Word if you don’t need the entire Office suite.
It’s important to make sure that your binge-watching doesn’t interfere with your studies. However, there’s certainly a place for recreation in a productive academic schedule. It’s OK to take breaks!
Doing something fun and relaxing in your downtime can help maintain your concentration when you’re in class or at the library.
Would you recommend any other essential Windows apps for students? Or are you looking for a piece of software to fit a particular academic purpose? Either way, why not join the discussion in the comments section below.
When you’re buying a laptop, don’t assume it offers good battery life. If a manufacturer isn’t touting the battery, it’s probably best to skip that notebook. You need to check the battery rating before you buy.
The best laptops never leave the user hanging. They have enough battery life to last an entire workday. After all, even if you bought a notebook with top-of-the-line specs, it’s a useless chunk of metal when the battery runs out.
My hunt for laptops with the best battery life shows there isn’t a clear answer. That’s because manufacturer battery ratings and real-world tests don’t always match up. So I relied on a combination of my own experience, hardware knowledge, third-party reviews, and user reviews to come up with this list.
The Toshiba Chromebook 2 still gives you about 12 hours of real-world usage, which is fantastic in any case. That’s despite an Intel Celeron processor, while other laptops at this price go for the low-performance Intel Atom processor.
Despite that, it has arguably the best battery life among all laptops running Chrome OS, with only the Acer Chromebook 13 (read our review) giving it some competition. Dell’s laptop lasts for 14–15 hours of real-world usage, and might go a little more if you dim the screen brightness a bit.
Multiple reviewers say the Vivobook E403SA should last for around 10–12 hours of real-world usage. That’s impressive in its own right, outpacing the MacBook Air, among others. But the cherry on top is the USB Type-C charging port on the E403SA. If you use a USB-C phone, you can charge your laptopand smartphone with the same cable. Convenience at its best!
The Asus Zenbook UX305 is a personal favorite. I even bought it after testing it, so the 9–10 hours figure comes from personal experience. This sleek laptop perfectly balances portability, performance, battery life, and features. It also packs a solid state drive, since SSDs are better for battery life. In fact, the Zenbook proves you’re wasting money if you buy an expensive laptop. Are You Wasting Money If You Buy An Expensive Laptop? Are You Wasting Money If You Buy An Expensive Laptop? The average consumer buys a laptop that costs about $600, a behavior that’s persisted for years. However, there’s one thing to know. The Zenbook UX305 comes in several variants, and you need to buy the model with the Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) display. There’s also a high-res QHD model, but its battery life suffers due to the screen resolution. Stick with the Full HD version and you’ll be happy.
The 13-inch variant of the MacBook Air is still the best laptop to buy under $1,000. A big reason for that is the battery life. The MacBook Air 13 was the battery king for a long time, after all.Best Laptops Under $1,000 in 2016Best Laptops Under $1,000 in 2016Unlike desktop PCs, you are unlikely to upgrade your laptop by fitting in a couple of new parts. You can expect this battery life on the Intel Core i5 version. The Intel Core i7 version drops the battery rating by a couple of hours, which is still excellent if you need that extra power.
I’ve long said that the MacBook Air is an excellent value-for-money laptop. But if you’re planning on buying one, wait if you can. Apple is expected to refresh the line with new 6th generation Intel Skylake processors, which will again boost the battery slightly.
When it first launched, the XPS 13 actually didn’t have great battery life. But subsequent iterations have fixed this issue, and the 2016 version has been rated to last for 14–15 hours of real-world usage.
You need to purchase the non-touch XPS 13 to avail of this battery boost. The touchscreen version still has good battery, but it drops to about 9–10 hours.
The company recently updated the Blade Stealth to improve the battery life. Razer says you can expect nine hours on a single charge, so real-world usage should be about seven hours, going by the previous record. The laptop hasn’t been tested yet, so we can only guess.
If you want to play games on a laptop, you’ll need to sacrifice battery life to some extent. In that aspect, I find the Blade Stealth to be a better idea, since you can use the Razer Core external GPU with it too. That said, buy this only if you want a gaming machine.
Isn’t it nice when most reviewers agree on something? Almost every single user and reviewer has said that the ThinkPad X260 has the best battery life among all laptops today. It’s also good that this comes with the most reputed laptop brand in the world. The ThinkPad X260 is light enough to be portable while managing about 18 hours of battery life in most tests. Lenovo has one internal and two external batteries for this one. There’s a 23 Whr battery built in, and a 23 Whr external battery that can be plugged to the laptop. Lenovo also packs a 48 Whr external battery. You can swap the external batteries when you want. That’s some long battery life!
If you’re a working professional who needs a laptop that won’t die on you, and can do every office task you ask of it, the ThinkPad X260 is what you want.
We’re already at a point where you can go a full day without needing to charge your notebook. Do you need more battery life than that? What do you think is the ideal or minimum battery life needed from any laptop?
