How to Use Siri on Your Mac: A Quick Start Guide

Apple’s intelligent personal assistant Siri has (finally) made the jump to Mac, courtesy of the macOS 10.12 Sierra update. The update brings most of the features iOS users have had for years to the desktop, with a few caveats.5 Reasons to Install macOS Sierra Right Now & How to Upgrade 5 Reasons to Install macOS Sierra Right Now & How to UpgradeAfter a few months of public beta, the latest version of Apple's desktop operating system is ready for prime time.READ MORE
Controlling your Mac with your voice has never been easier. Here’s what you can do, and how to personalize the experience.

Hear the Voice

You’re asked to activate Siri during the macOS Sierra setup process. You can do this later by visitingSystem Preferences > Siri. On this screen, you can configure some things about how Siri works, including the default language and voice.
Siri Settings on macOS Sierra
Siri on Mac is available in many languages, including multiple versions of Chinese, English, and Spanish. In the United States, most are familiar with the American female voice. You can change this to an American male voice, a male/female Australian and British voice, plus female versions of Irish and South African English voices. Each accent changes the general Siri experience on Mac. Play around with these to find the one that best suits your needs.Voice of Siri Susan Bennett Tells MakeUseOf How Siri Changed Her Life Voice of Siri Susan Bennett Tells MakeUseOf How Siri Changed Her LifeAt the forefront of Apple's original caring, often funny voice-powered assistant is a voice recognized the world over. Unlike Siri on iOS, Apple’s voice assistant on Mac doesn’t respond when you say “Hey Siri”. Instead, to begin a query, click the Siri icon in the Mac dock or menubar in the top-right of the screen. You can also set up a keyboard shortcut.
Under System Preferences you’ll find the following options:
  • Voice feedback — With this setting on, Siri responds to queries with a voice and by text. With this setting off, responses arrive through text only.
  • Mic input — If you have external microphones, you can use this setting to select it.
  • Keyboard shortcut — You can use any keyboard combination to activate Siri, withCommand+ Space being the default. You can also select from Option + Space and Function + Space. You can create different shortcuts by selecting Customize.

About Siri and Security

In macOS Sierra, Apple provides a lengthy security statement on Siri. Located on the Siri Settings page under “Siri and Privacy,” the report explains how Apple analyzes Siri queries. You should read this statement, especially as it relates to how Siri handles questions relating to Mac documents.Siri Is Listening: Has iOS Privacy Been Blown Open? Siri Is Listening: Has iOS Privacy Been Blown Open?Apple's has been accused of recording everything - absolutely everything - you say to Siri, and passing it to a third-party. But is this really a privacy breach, or is there good reason for it?READ MORE
On this point, Apple notes:
When you use Siri to search for your documents, the Siri request is sent to Apple, but the names and the content of your documents are not sent to Apple. The search is performed locally on the Mac.
You can learn more about how Cupertino handles privacy on the Apple website.
Siri on Mac offers a lot of useful features, even as a first generation release. These features fall into two broad categories, which we’ll call workflow and entertainment.

Let’s Get to Work

One of the main reasons to use Siri on your Mac is to improve and speed up your workflow. Central to this is Siri’s broad search capabilities. By just asking a question, Siri can find any document that resides on your Mac.Ditch The Dock To Speed Up Your Mac Workflow Ditch The Dock To Speed Up Your Mac WorkflowWhile the dock can't be entirely eliminated, there are many powerful alternatives that can reduce your dependence on using the dock as an app launcher.READ MORE

Finding Your Files

For example, you need to find a file with “2015” in the title. You don’t know the location of the file or its full file name. Before the arrival of Siri, you would type “2015” into Spotlight and hope for the best. With Siri, search becomes more efficient and yes, personal.
In our example, we could ask Siri:
  • “Show me all files with ‘2015’ in the title.”
  • “Show me files with ‘2015’ in the title, opened in 2016.”
  • “Show me all records with ‘2015’ in the title, located in the Desktop folder.”
Do you use Dropbox or OneDrive? As long as a folder is accessible from your Mac, Siri can search through it, even when those are remote files.

Siri Loves Photos

Enjoy snapping photos? Siri can search for images with ease thanks to new tagging features in Photos for Mac in macOS Sierra. You can also use Siri to find images from the web.
Siri Find Photos of Sunset on the Web
For example, you could ask Siri:
  • “Find photos from July 2014.”
  • “Find pictures of a sunset on the web.”
  • “Show me the NBC logo.”
  • “Find my photos from the beach.”
  • “Show me photos with Jon.”
Of course, for that last one to work you’ll need to open up Photos and label “Jon” under the newPeople album.

Conversions and Sums

Need to find a percentage quickly? Want to multiply two large numbers? Wondering how many feet are in 9 metres? Making a purchase overseas and wondering what it’ll cost in your local currency. These are all supported by Siri, simply ask:
  • “What’s 17% of 350?”
  • “How much is 45 multiplied by 300?”
  • “How many miles is 75 kilometers?”
  • “What is 500 US dollars in Australian dollars?”

Composing Documents

You can also create documents with Siri on Mac. To do so, start with a command such as “Send John a text” or “Send John an email”. From there, Siri will prompt you to compose the message using your voice.
Siri Mac Messages
When completed, Siri sends the message automatically. You can also use Siri to compose tweets, Facebook posts, and more. You cannot write documents in applications like Pages and Word with Siri. In this release, Siri cannot work with any third-party applications, unlike its iOS counterpart.
You could always try composing documents and longer passages with your Mac’s dictation feature though. Can You Write A Whole Article Using Voice Dictation on the Mac? Drag and Drop

Images, files, and other information Siri finds are easy to add to a folder. Just drag the results right to a window on your Desktop. Better still, you can pull images found on the web into Mac applications such as Pages and Numbers.

Free Space and Battery

Siri is also very good at finding critical information about your Mac, including free space and battery percentage.Calibrate & Maintain Your MacBook Battery For Best Performance Calibrate & Maintain Your MacBook Battery For Best PerformanceIf you correctly calibrate and maintain your MacBook battery, it's possible to improve performance and put off replacing it for as long as possible.READ MORE
To find this information, simply ask Siri:
  • “How much free space do I have?”
  • “How much battery do I have left?”
Whether it’s helping you compose a message or helping you find a relevant file, Siri on Mac has you covered.

The Fun Stuff

Your Mac likes to have fun too, and so does Siri. At launch, the voice assistant already knows a lot about the outside world, including sports news, Twitter results, weather, and more. Among the commands to try:
  • “What’s happening in the world?”
  • “What’s the weather in New York City?”
  • “Did the Boston Red Sox win yesterday?”
  • “What’s the latest from Twitter?”
Depending on your question, you can pin the results to Notification Center. By doing so, everything about that topic stays up to date. To pin an item, click on the “+” button at the top right of the Siri query result.
Sports Game Summary Siri on Mac
For example, the question “When do the New England Patriots play next” offers the results you see above. The Siri box contains information on the next two football games, including a score, when applicable. Notice that it also features the + button to pin this information to your Mac’s Notification Center.
To pin the entire future schedule of your favorite sports team, tell Siri something like, “New England Patriots schedule for 2016”.
Siri Find Cinema Movies Playing
There are a few more entertainment-related commands to get you started with Siri.
  • “What’s on at the cinema?”
  • “How many miles to Columbus, OH?”
  • “How many days until Thanksgiving?”
Siri on Mac is packed full of beneficial features even on day one. Just imagine what the future holds in future macOS releases.

7 Laptops With the Best Battery Life in 2016

When you’re buying a laptop, don’t assume it offers good battery life. If a manufacturer isn’t touting the battery, it’s probably best to skip that notebook. You need to check the battery rating before you buy.
The best laptops never leave the user hanging. They have enough battery life to last an entire workday. After all, even if you bought a notebook with top-of-the-line specs, it’s a useless chunk of metal when the battery runs out.
My hunt for laptops with the best battery life shows there isn’t a clear answer. That’s because manufacturer battery ratings and real-world tests don’t always match up. So I relied on a combination of my own experience, hardware knowledge, third-party reviews, and user reviews to come up with this list.

Low-Cost Chromebook: Toshiba Chromebook 2 (CA/UK)

  • Battery rating — 45 Wh
  • Expected real-world usage — 12–13 hours
At the $300 mark, the Chromebook to buy is the Toshiba Chromebook 2. You’ll find laptops at this range with longer battery life, but their other features make them inadvisable to buy. It’s the best all-around Chromebook for students in 2016.Best Chromebooks for Students in 2016 Best Chromebooks for Students in 2016If you're heading back to school this fall, you might want to consider aChromebook. The Toshiba Chromebook 2 still gives you about 12 hours of real-world usage, which is fantastic in any case. That’s despite an Intel Celeron processor, while other laptops at this price go for the low-performance Intel Atom processor.

Best Chromebook: Dell Chromebook 13

  • Battery rating — 67 Wh
  • Expected real-world usage — 14–15 hours
Buying a Chromebook doesn’t mean you have to settle for mediocre hardware. The DellChromebook 13 is the perfect example of that, balancing good specifications with long battery life. There’s a Full HD 13-inch screen here, after all. It’s ideal to make the switch to Chromebook and never look back.Make an Easy Switch to Chromebook Now (and Never Look Back) Make an Easy Switch to Chromebook Now (and Never Look Back)I've adopted, studied every Windows OS, adapted, and eventually learned to love each of them for different reasons. Despite that, it has arguably the best battery life among all laptops running Chrome OS, with only the Acer Chromebook 13 (read our review) giving it some competition. Dell’s laptop lasts for 14–15 hours of real-world usage, and might go a little more if you dim the screen brightness a bit.

Cheapest With Windows: Asus Vivobook E403SA (CA)

  • Battery rating — 57 Wh
  • Expected real-world usage — 10–12 hours
The Asus Vivobook E403SA is one of the best laptops under $500. Among cheap Windows laptops, it has perhaps the best battery life. The 5 Best Laptops Under $500 in 2016 The 5 Best Laptops Under $500 in 2016It's surprising how little you have to spend to get a good laptop these days. Multiple reviewers say the Vivobook E403SA should last for around 10–12 hours of real-world usage. That’s impressive in its own right, outpacing the MacBook Air, among others. But the cherry on top is the USB Type-C charging port on the E403SA. If you use a USB-C phone, you can charge your laptopand smartphone with the same cable. Convenience at its best!

Perfectly Balanced: Asus Zenbook UX305 (CAUK)

  • Battery rating — 45 Wh
  • Expected real-world usage — 9–10 hours
The Asus Zenbook UX305 is a personal favorite. I even bought it after testing it, so the 9–10 hours figure comes from personal experience. This sleek laptop perfectly balances portability, performance, battery life, and features. It also packs a solid state drive, since SSDs are better for battery life. In fact, the Zenbook proves you’re wasting money if you buy an expensive laptop. Are You Wasting Money If You Buy An Expensive Laptop? Are You Wasting Money If You Buy An Expensive Laptop? The average consumer buys a laptop that costs about $600, a behavior that’s persisted for years. However, there’s one thing to know. The Zenbook UX305 comes in several variants, and you need to buy the model with the Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) display. There’s also a high-res QHD model, but its battery life suffers due to the screen resolution. Stick with the Full HD version and you’ll be happy.

Bite the Apple: MacBook Air 13 (CAUK)

  • Battery rating — 54 Wh
  • Expected real-world usage — 15–16 hours
The 13-inch variant of the MacBook Air is still the best laptop to buy under $1,000. A big reason for that is the battery life. The MacBook Air 13 was the battery king for a long time, after all.Best Laptops Under $1,000 in 2016 Best Laptops Under $1,000 in 2016Unlike desktop PCs, you are unlikely to upgrade your laptop by fitting in a couple of new parts. You can expect this battery life on the Intel Core i5 version. The Intel Core i7 version drops the battery rating by a couple of hours, which is still excellent if you need that extra power.
I’ve long said that the MacBook Air is an excellent value-for-money laptop. But if you’re planning on buying one, wait if you can. Apple is expected to refresh the line with new 6th generation Intel Skylake processors, which will again boost the battery slightly.

Ultra-Powered Ultrabook: Dell XPS 13 (CAUK)

  • Battery rating — 57 Wh
  • Expected real-world usage — 14–15 hours
Ask any geek which Windows laptop to buy these days, and the answer is almost unanimous. If you can afford the Dell XPS 13, it’s the best Windows ultrabook. And part of the reason is its battery life. What Is An Ultrabook & Can It Succeed? [Technology Explained] What Is An Ultrabook & Can It Succeed? When it first launched, the XPS 13 actually didn’t have great battery life. But subsequent iterations have fixed this issue, and the 2016 version has been rated to last for 14–15 hours of real-world usage.
You need to purchase the non-touch XPS 13 to avail of this battery boost. The touchscreen version still has good battery, but it drops to about 9–10 hours.

Game On: Razer Blade Stealth (CA)

  • Battery rating — 54 Wh
  • Expected real-world usage — 14–15 hours
At the start of this year, Razer, a big brand in gaming peripherals, launched a specialized gaming laptop called the Blade Stealth. It’s a sleek, powerful piece of hardware meant for PC gaming on the go. Unfortunately, all that power and sleekness meant sacrificing battery life.Best of CES 2016: 6 Amazing Products That Are Coming Soon Best of CES 2016: 6 Amazing Products That Are Coming SoonCES 2016 showcased thousands of awesome products, prototypes, and demonstrations. The company recently updated the Blade Stealth to improve the battery life. Razer says you can expect nine hours on a single charge, so real-world usage should be about seven hours, going by the previous record. The laptop hasn’t been tested yet, so we can only guess.
If you want to play games on a laptop, you’ll need to sacrifice battery life to some extent. In that aspect, I find the Blade Stealth to be a better idea, since you can use the Razer Core external GPU with it too. That said, buy this only if you want a gaming machine.

The Longest Lasting: Lenovo ThinkPad X260 (CAUK)

  • Battery rating — 23 Wh + 23 Wh + 48 Wh
  • Expected real-world usage — 18–20 hours
Isn’t it nice when most reviewers agree on something? Almost every single user and reviewer has said that the ThinkPad X260 has the best battery life among all laptops today. It’s also good that this comes with the most reputed laptop brand in the world. Just remember to watch out for malware on Lenovo laptops. Now It's THREE Pre-Installed Malwares on Lenovo Laptops Now It's THREE Pre-Installed Malwares on Lenovo LaptopsFor the third time in a year, Lenovo have been caught shipping customers computers laden with privacy-unfriendly malware, showing that they haven't learned the lessons from the public outcry over Superfish.READ MORE
The ThinkPad X260 is light enough to be portable while managing about 18 hours of battery life in most tests. Lenovo has one internal and two external batteries for this one. There’s a 23 Whr battery built in, and a 23 Whr external battery that can be plugged to the laptop. Lenovo also packs a 48 Whr external battery. You can swap the external batteries when you want. That’s some long battery life!
If you’re a working professional who needs a laptop that won’t die on you, and can do every office task you ask of it, the ThinkPad X260 is what you want.

How Much Battery Life Is Enough?

We’re already at a point where you can go a full day without needing to charge your notebook. Do you need more battery life than that? What do you think is the ideal or minimum battery life needed from any laptop?
