Samsung, Apple, Motorola and Micromax make 65 percent of the second hand market in India: Cashify survey

Samsung, Apple, Motorola and Micromax make 65 percent of the second hand market in India: Cashify survey

Lurking somewhere behind the booming smartphone segment is an active ‘seconds’ market. And, hasn’t it always been there?
Go back by a decade, and most of us will remember walking into a local mobile store, and exchanging our older phone for a new/used shiny device. In the last couple of years, the e-commerce space has tried to emulate the same online, with a push given especially by premium brands like Apple and Samsung, often with their full page advertisements persuading consumers to exchange older devices. And, there are many online players helping ecommerce companies and others achieve just that.  There is an entire ecosystem for the seconds market like Quikr, OLX and Ebay, and one such is Cashify.
Cashify is basically involved in disposing off your old electronics through an online/app journey that includes doorstep pickup service, and also instant payment of your choice. Fort doing so it has teamed up with some of the major online as well as offline players including Snapdeal, Amazon, eBay, Croma, Google and HP, among others. CEO, Mandeep Manocha tells us that, “Cashify has build custom software interface and embedded these in many such e-commerce players enabling them to offer exchange as a sales promotion to their customers from an affordability perspective.”
Cashify is now out with its internal research report showing the peculiar pattern of the exchange market conducted over a sample size of 90,000 users (in the period August to October). To begin with, it says 40 used smartphones are being traded in the second hand smartphone market for every 100 new smartphones. And, the average selling price of 70 percent of the phones sold were in the range of Rs 4,000 to Rs 6,000.
The report shows a massive growth in buyback in the month of October, which could be possibly owing to the festive season. But, the number of unique models traded online were higher in August compared to October.

And, only 7-8 percent of all devices traded are above Rs 18,000 in value, and this constitutes mainly of iPhones and some high end Samsung devices. However, Manocha explains the demand may be dynamic but the brand perception remains largely unchanged. That pretty much explains why the iPhone shows the slowest depreciation rate. However, when it comes to exchange of devices, Samsung leads by a good margin. The reason is simple Samsung release phones on varying price point and is still the seasoned OEM that has been conveniently filling the gap left by Nokia. Then, we also have the likes of Chinese vendors such as Xiaomi and OnePlus, among others who have managed to become a part of the market.
In terms of the brand share, 65 percent share in the second hand smartphone market has been captured by four brands – Samsung, Apple, Motorola and Micromax.

“Brands like OnePlus and Xiaomi and Lenovo have significantly added to the secondhand market options both in terms of price-points and device variety, as they have to the new device market. The market acceptance of such brands has further driven their second hand demand,” he added.

He also points out a significantly lower refresh cycle for low priced second-hand devices “With the entry of an array of low priced devices that have captured large market share has seen a fair number of such phones further entering the second hand market. Such devices will not only have a lower first refresh cycle but an even lower second refresh cycle. So customers buying low priced second-hand phones would find themselves needing to replace their device much sooner than expected. A secondhand customer who would have ideally come back to the market for another second hand device in a 6 to 11 months is now back in 3 to 6 months. This keeps the demand going,” he said.
Cashify survey also reveals that Delhi saw the maximum second-hand phone sale, followed by Bangalore and Mumbai.

Leaks suggest Moto M to launch soon with a metal body and 5100mAh battery

Leaks suggest Moto M to launch soon with a metal body and 5100mAh battery

By
Lenovo took over Moto and managed to bring in an interesting product in the form of the Moto Z along with Moto Mods. Motorola also has some interesting offerings in the budget segment including the popular Moto G range and the Moto E range.
Now we are hearing that a new Moto series is arriving which will sit between the budget range and the higher-end Moto Z range. The new Moto M has leaked and there is quite a lot of info. Firstly it will feature a metal body design. Yup, we haven’t seen such a phone from Motorola ever since it jumped into the smartphone business.

LG G6 will not be modular smartphone

LG G6 will not be modular smartphone

Representational image for smartphones.
By
LG launched its flagship smartphone, the G5, this year with a unique modular design. It was one of the first Android running smartphones that had the ability to swap a panel and replace it to add a new feature to the device.
The bottom part of the smartphone would pop out and you could attach a DAC or a camera control module. It did had a major issue though, one had to remove the battery along with the modules or what LG called ‘friends’. The swapping was not seamless. The smartphone was definitely a unique offering, but it didn’t do well. LG had big plans for the smartphone including a fuller ecosystem, but by the month of June it was clear that the smartphone was a failure. In fact the sales were so bad, the company fired a chunk of its smartphone designers.
Now according to a report, LG will not continue to use a modular design for the upcoming G6 flagship handset. Google had recently announced the end of Project Ara, which was a disappointment for many. LG taking the similar path is not surprising at all.
Motorola and Lenovo on the other had have a more promising modular smartphone strategy. Their new Moto Z smartphone along with the magnetically attachable Moto Mods seems to be more reliable and seamless. It has already opened up the Moto Mods design open for developers, which is good thing. But the real question here is, will the company manage to keep the modular smartphone dream running?

Apple will sell fewer smartwatches in 2016 than it did last year

By Rob Thubron on October 4, 2016, 9:30 AM

Respected KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has a history of making accurate predictions regarding Apple products, but the iPhone maker will likely be hoping his latest estimates prove wrong. Kuo believes the company will sell fewer Apple Watches this year than it did in 2015.

Kuo had predicted that Apple would ship between 10 million to 10.5 million Apple Watches in 2016. The figures includes both the original Series 1 model and the recently released Series 2.

But in a note to investors obtained by Business Insider, Kuo revised his estimates. He now believes that 8.5 million to 9 million Apple Watches will ship by the end of the year – a drop of 15 to 25 percent from his original prediction. He has, however, raised shipping estimates for the Apple Watch Series 2 by 10 percent, though this isn’t enough to stop the overall sales figure from decreasing.

Apple hasn’t revealed how many of its original wearables have sold since they launched in April last year, so estimates tend to vary wildly. Kuo believes 10.4 million units shipped during the eight months the Apple watch was available in 2015, meaning fewer units are predicted to sell in 2016 - despite the longer selling time.

So why the pessimistic outlook from Kuo? He identifies four main reasons why the smartwatches aren't selling as well as Apple hoped. Like similar devices, the lack of a “killer” app and a poor battery life are major issues for many consumers. Kuo also identifies a reliance on

Microsoft becomes the latest major player to exit the smartwatch industry

By Shawn Knight on October 3, 2016, 4:45 PM

Last month it was revealed that three of the largest Android Wear partners – LG, Huawei and Motorola – had no intentions of launching any new smartwatches or fitness trackers this fall. Now, it seems as though Microsoft has hopped off the wearables bandwagon as well.

As of today, Microsoft has scrubbed every mention of its Band line of wearables from its online store and pulled the Band SDK from its developer portal. Best Buy has followed suit as well and according to The Verge, Amazon will no longer carry the wearable once its current supply runs dry.

A Microsoft spokesperson told ZDNet that they have sold through their existing Band 2 inventory and have no plans to release another Band device this year. That said, the spokesperson did say that Microsoft will continue to support Band 2 customers through the Microsoft Store and their customer support channels. Microsoft will also continue to invest in the Microsoft Health platform, we’re told.

ZDNet also heard last month that Microsoft had disbanded (no pun intended) the small group that was working to get Windows 10 onto the wearable.

Microsoft entered the wearables industry in late 2014 with Band, its fitness-tracking smartband. A year later (last October), the Redmond-based company launched its second-generation Band 2.

With three major Android players and Microsoft now having pulled out of the market, one can only wonder how long smartwatches will persist without a killer, must-have app.

Google delays Android Wear 2.0 until 2017

By Tim Schiesser on September 30, 2016, 9:30 AM

Google was originally expected to release the next major version of Android Wear late this year, however a recent post from the company has revealed the smartwatch operating system has been delayed until early 2017.

The Android Wear 2.0 developer preview program will continue throughout the rest of this year and in to 2017, with watches set to get the final build early next year. Google announced the availability of the third developer preview several days ago, and the company says another developer preview will be released before the update is sent to OEMs.

In the third developer preview, Google has added the Play Store to Android Wear 2.0. It may seem a little cramped, however users can now browse and install apps directly from their watch, rather than using the equivalent app on their smartwatch. Searching for apps is as easy as using voice commands, the tiny Android Wear keyboard, or handwriting.

The Play Store on Android Wear also allows you to install only the watch app, provided the app supports this feature of Android Wear 2.0. This prevents apps you only use on your watch from clogging up the app tray on your smartphone.

The choice to delay Android Wear 2.0 until next year seems to fit with the plans of major Android Wear OEMs such as LG, Motorola and Huawei, who decided to hold off releasing any new smartwatches during the fall. In early 2017 we could see a major relaunch of Android Wear complete with new devices running the updated operating system.

Moto Z modular smartphone to launch in India on 4 October

Moto Z modular smartphone to launch in India on 4 October

By
Motorola recently launched the budget friendly Moto E3 Power for Indian consumers and now it is all set to launch its flagship smartphone. The Moto Z will be officially making its way on 4 October in India as the company has sent out invites confirming the launch day.
The company’s first ever modular smartphone made its debut at the Lenovo Tech World conference in June earlier this year. The smartphone currently has three variants; the Moto Z, Moto Z Force and Moto Z Play, but there is no confirmation if Moto will launch all three of them.
The main attraction of the Moto Z lineup is the 16 magnetic connector pins at the back where one can simply snap on ‘Moto Mods’. These Moto Mods are modules which add or enhance the capability of the smartphone. Some of them include battery packs, a JBL speaker, a Pico projector and a high-end Hasselblad camera. The mods are also expected to launch with the smartphone.
As far as the smartphones are concerned, the Moto Z features a 5.5-inch QHD (2560×1440) AMOLED display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor with 4GB RAM, 64GB of internal memory which is further expandable via microSD card, 4G LTE connectivity, a fingerprint scanner. In the camera department you get a 13MP unit at the back with with an f/1.8 aperture, laser autofocus, OIS and dual LED flash while on the front there is 5MP camera. Running on Android 6.0 Marshmallow the battery is rated at 2,600 mAh battery. Oh, and you don’t get a 3.5mm audio jack, so audio is routed via the USB Type-C port.
The Moto Z Force is pretty much similar in looks and design, it is slightly bulky and offers the shatter-shield protection just like the Moto X Force. Other differences include a larger 3.500mAh battery and a better 23MP camera on the back.
On the other hand, the Moto Z Play is a more nimble version and features a 5.5-inch display with a full HD resolution (1920×1080 pixels), a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor with 3GB of RAM and 32GB storage, a 16MP primary camera with dual-LED flash and a 3,510mAh battery.

Android Wear 2.0 Launch Postponed To 2017: What Caused Google's Delay?

29 September 2016, 6:55 pm EDT By Fritz Gleyo Tech Times

Many have been anticipating the release of Android Wear 2.0 ever since it was announced during Google’s I/O conference back in May.

The upcoming operating system update for wearables packs in a ton of new features such as Play Store for Android Wear, apps that can run independently on the watch as opposed to being tethered to a smartphone, an onscreen keyboard and new fitness apps.

However, users will have to wait a bit longer since Google will not be rolling out 2.0 this year. The release has been pushed back to 2017.

Note that only the developer preview version of Android Wear 2.0 is out at the moment. Google is extending the developer preview until early 2017, which is also the timeframe that the tech giant has set for the first smartwatches to receive the Android Wear 2.0 update.

"We’ve gotten tons of great feedback from the developer community about Android Wear 2.0––thank you! We’ve decided to continue the preview program into early 2017, at which point the first watches will receive Android Wear 2.0," says Google in a blog post.
Why Is The Release Delayed?

The OS version is not yet ready for prime time. Google wants to iron out bugs and encourages its developer community to keep spotting more.

Bear in mind that Android Wear 2.0 Developer Preview is only available on a couple of devices. One is the Huawei Watch and the other is the LTE-equipped LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition. Both are running on the same processor, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 clocked at 1,200 MHz.

LG, Huawei and Motorola made it clear that they will be releasing Android Wear devices for the remainder of 2016.
The Wearable Market

According to data gathered by the IDC, the demand for wearables has increased by more than 67 percent in the first quarter of 2016 compared to the previous year. Total shipment volumes reached 19.7 million units for Q1 2016, which is quite the jump from Q1 2015’s 11.8 million units.

(Photo : Android Wear) Android Wear 2.0 will arrive in 2017.

"The good news is that the wearables market continues to mature and expand," says Ramon Llamas, research manager for IDC's Wearables team. "The wearables that we see today are several steps ahead of what we saw when this market began, increasingly taking their cues from form, function, and fashion.”

The IDC data also shows that Fitbit dominates the wearable market and claims more than a quarter of it. It is followed by Xiaomi, Apple, Garmin, Samsung and BBK.

Moto Z and Moto G4 series to get Android 7.0 Nougat in Q4

Moto Z and Moto G4 series to get Android 7.0 Nougat in Q4
Google’s new Android 7.0 Nougat update has started rolling out to the Nexus as well as some Android One smartphones. Even LG announced that its new smartphone, the V20, will come with the new update out of the box. The next smartphone(s) in line that might get the new update will be coming from Lenovo, err Moto.
According to Droid Life, a Lenovo spokesperson has given a tip that the Nougat update will start rolling for the Moto Z range as well as the Moto G4 series in the fourth quarter of this year. So basically the Moto Z, Moto Z Force, Moto Z Play, Moto G4, Moto G4 Plus and hopefully the Moto G4 Play.
There is no info around other Moto products however Lenovo has said that “upgrades are about getting it right and making sure the phone performance remains the best it can be and that the company will be sharing upgrade plans for other products and more specific timing later.”
Assumingly the Moto X range and the Moto G 3rd-gen will get the new update by early next year. And knowing Motorola, it shouldn’t on time in bringing the new update to its products as it has been one of the only few brands that rolls out updates on time.

Lenovo lays off over 700 Motorola employees

Lenovo has started its latest round of layoffs that is set to hurt Motorola employees, yet again. Lenovo had acquired Motorola back in 2014, and the new move is aimed at streamlining workforce after another sluggish quarter. However, it is said to impact two percent of the overall workforce, which is 55,000 employees globally.
The new number is pegged to be more than 50 percent of the remaining Moto workforce. According to DroidLife, over 700 out of the 1200 Motorola employees will be informed they’ve lost their jobs.
An official statement from Lenovo states:
Lenovo today announced a resource action impacting less than two percent of its approximately 55,000 employees globally. The majority of the positions being eliminated are part of the ongoing strategic integration between Lenovo and its Motorola smartphone business as the company further aligns its organisation and streamlines its product portfolio to best compete in the global smartphone market.
The company is also making adjustments in other areas of the business as part of a continued effort to manage costs, drive efficiency and support ongoing improvement in overall financial performance. While these actions are never easy, they are a necessary part of our continued efforts to ensure long-term, profitable growth across all of our businesses.
Lenovo is absolutely committed to Chicago and we plan to maintain our Motorola Mobility headquarters there. Chicago has a well-deserved reputation for technical excellence and as the hub of our global R&D for our smartphone business we expect to take advantage of local talent to continue developing Moto products there.
Many see it as the last step to merge Motorola completely into their own business. It was not too long ago that Motorola was renamed Moto by Lenovo. The move, as stated above, is also a change in its strategy to improve financial performance.
Meanwhile, AndroidPolice claims that Motorola has lost more than 95 percent of its employees in the last four years. It should be noted that Google acquired Motorola in 2012, and sold it to Lenovo in 2014
