ZUK Edge II could be announced with a curved display and dual-camera setup

If you remember Lenovo’s sub-brand ZUK announced the ZUK Edge in China back in December. It has just been a couple of months and it seems that a successor to the smartphone is already in place, well atleast a special edition.

A few alleged images of the ZUK Edge II including a special edition dedicated to Luo Tianyi, a Vocaloid character popular in China, have emerged. As you can see the special edition comes in a distinctive blue shade while the regular Edge II could be offered in black. Also, this model actually has a curved display unlike the ZUK Edge which had a flat panel.

Underneath the display we don’t see any physical button but a faint LED light. At the back there are dual cameras arranged in a vertical layout, again something new for ZUK. There are no specifications or any other details about the handset and considering the ZUK Edge launched just two months back, we are a bit skeptical about this one.

The ZUK Edge came with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 quad-core SoC clocked at 2.35GHz. There are two RAM variants 4GB and 6GB with 64GB of storage along with a microSD expansion slot. At the back there is a 13MP rear camera with a 1.34-micron pixel Samsung ISOCELL sensor, an f/2.2 aperture, PDAF+CAF hybrid autofocus, and a high-brightness flash.

There is an 8MP camera on the front with a 1.12-micron pixel sensor, and an f/2.2 aperture. It features a USB Type-C (v3.1) port and a unique under-glass U Touch fingerprint sensor that is said to unlock the phone under 0.09 seconds). It also packs in some unique features like a built-in blood oxygen heart rate sensor, a pneumatic altimeter and a UV light sensor. The smartphone runs on Android 7.0 Nougat with ZUI 2.5 on top. Connectivity options dual-SIM slots, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS/ A-GPS. On the battery front, you get a 3,100mAh unit with Quick Charge 3.0 support.

ZUK Edge with Snapdragon 821 goes official in China

Lenovo has finally announced a new ZUK handset and yes it is the ZUK Edge. The smartphone has been leaked quite a bit in the past and today we finally have official information of the device.

The most attractive feature is its unique display design. It features a 5.5-inch full-HD TDDI display with a curved Gorilla Glass that is said to have 86.4 percent screen-to-body ratio which makes it almost bezel-less.

In terms of specs, it is packed to the brim. You get the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 quad-core SoC clocked at 2.35GHz. There are two RAM variants 4GB and 6GB with 64GB of storage along with a microSD expansion slot. Pricing starts at 2299 Yuan (Rs. 23,000 approx) for the 4GB RAM version and 2499 Yuan (Rs 25,000 approx) for the 6GB RAM version.  If Lenovo manages to bring the smartphone at a similar pricing to India, then it could give some serious competition to the OnePlus 3T.

Update: Lenovo Vibe K6 Power is going on sale exclusively on Flipkart from 29th November.

Lenovo recently teased the launch of Lenovo Vibe K6 Power in a tweet on Twitter. The company has sent out invites to media outlets for the launch event. Lenovo will launch the new smartphone in New Delhi on 29 November.

One thing to note is that the company had already launched the smartphone during IFA 2016 tradeshow in Berlin with another smartphone from K-series, the Lenovo K6 Note.

Vibe K6 Power packs a 5-inch Full HD screen along with an octa-core 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 and Adreno 505 GPU. The smartphone runs Android Marshmallow 6.0.1 out of the box and comes in two variants, one with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage while the other one with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage. It also sports a microSD card slot to expand the storage.

Lenovo Vibe K6 Power is equipped with a 4000mAh battery along with a 13MP camera module with an LED flash on the back and an 8MP camera module on the front. Regarding connectivity options, you get Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.1, GPS and 4G LTE radios.

It will be interesting to see how Lenovo prices the K6 Power considering smartphone makers such as Xiaomi and smartphones even from Lenovo’s other product ranges like Lenovo Moto G4 Plus and Lenovo Zuk Z2 Plus are extremely competitive and offer good value for money.

Lenovo Phab 2 Pro is the latest smartphone by Lenovo to go on sale for $499.99. In fact, the device is the first one that is powered by Google Tango framework which relies on depth sensing to create seamless Augmented reality figures on the screen. This company has been working on the technology since last few years with constant videos demoing it right from the early stages.Also, Google announced a Project Tango smartphone way back in 2014 along with Project Tango Tablet released in 2014.

Tango was originally known as Project Tango and looked like a simple concept that maybe used for something. We were not sure about what the depth-sensing will actually do but we got a concrete idea about it after Lenovo announced the smartphone in CES 2016 earlier this year. But Lenovo demoed the capabilities of the tango technology in Phab 2 Pro which made it a serious contender for the most innovative smartphone for the year.

The demos during Lenovo Tech World painted a perfect picture of how capable the platform was and that smartphones were powerful enough to sufficiently track the 3D world and project an augmented reality on the screen. These demos included using Tango platform to measure the dimensions of the room accurately and use shopping apps to virtually redecorate your room before buying furniture or new products for your home.

Other demonstrations included live size models of dinosaurs where you can check different species of dinosaurs  with life-size AR renders. The renders can be changes in scale to comparatively study the entire field with an unprecedented level of interactivity. This can result in newer and dedicated applications for students across different fields, right from students of architecture to medical students.

During the launch, there will be more than 20 apps available for Phab 2 Pro users to experience different aspects of what Tango platform has to offer. These apps range from ‘Augmented reality gaming’ and ‘Augmented reality utilities’ with the gaming apps directly aiming at pure gaming like Pokemon GO but without the battery drain while ‘utilities’ hinting at apps like “WayFairView,” “Measure,” and “Magic Plan.”

Leaks suggest Moto M to launch soon with a metal body and 5100mAh battery

Lenovo took over Moto and managed to bring in an interesting product in the form of the Moto Z along with Moto Mods. Motorola also has some interesting offerings in the budget segment including the popular Moto G range and the Moto E range.

Now we are hearing that a new Moto series is arriving which will sit between the budget range and the higher-end Moto Z range. The new Moto M has leaked and there is quite a lot of info. Firstly it will feature a metal body design. Yup, we haven’t seen such a phone from Motorola ever since it jumped into the smartphone business.

LG G6 will not be modular smartphone

LG launched its flagship smartphone, the G5, this year with a unique modular design. It was one of the first Android running smartphones that had the ability to swap a panel and replace it to add a new feature to the device.

The bottom part of the smartphone would pop out and you could attach a DAC or a camera control module. It did had a major issue though, one had to remove the battery along with the modules or what LG called ‘friends’. The swapping was not seamless. The smartphone was definitely a unique offering, but it didn’t do well. LG had big plans for the smartphone including a fuller ecosystem, but by the month of June it was clear that the smartphone was a failure. In fact the sales were so bad, the company fired a chunk of its smartphone designers.

Now according to a report, LG will not continue to use a modular design for the upcoming G6 flagship handset. Google had recently announced the end of Project Ara, which was a disappointment for many. LG taking the similar path is not surprising at all.

Motorola and Lenovo on the other had have a more promising modular smartphone strategy. Their new Moto Z smartphone along with the magnetically attachable Moto Mods seems to be more reliable and seamless. It has already opened up the Moto Mods design open for developers, which is good thing. But the real question here is, will the company manage to keep the modular smartphone dream running?

Xiaomi reportedly building a smartphone with flexible display

Joining the race to build a bendable smartphone, Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is reportedly working on its own version of such a device.

According to Inquirer, Xiaomi’s device made its public debut over the internet through a 30-second video posted last week.

The video, courtesy of Gizmodo China, did not show the phone being bent but rather a bent screen that is very responsive to touch.

Flexible displays or foldable, bendable smartphones are the future and earlier this year, another Chinese major Lenovo became the first company to display two futuristic concepts: a foldable smartphone that can be turned into a wearable device and a bendable tablet that becomes a phablet.

Apart from Lenovo, Korean smartphone-maker Samsung has been working on foldable displays for years and is reported to be ready to launch its first foldable smartphone in 2017.

Apple has also gone for patents that suggest it is set to develop iPhones with curved screens.

Lenovo will start selling the newly announced Moto Z range along with the new Moto Mods in India today. The smartphones and the Mods were announced just a couple of weeks back in the country. The Moto Z and Moto Z Play are priced at Rs 39,999 and Rs 24,999 respectively and will be available from Flipkart and Amazon tonight at 11:59PM.

The Moto Mods will also be available, which include the JBL Soundboost speaker (Rs 6,999), Incipio offGRID battery pack (Rs 5,999), Insta-share projector (Rs 19,999) and the good-looking Hasselblad True Zoom camera module (Rs 19,999).

When bundled with a smartphone purchase, the Moto Mods will be available at a reduced price as follows: JBL Soundboost speaker (Rs 5,999), Incipio offGRID battery pack (Rs 4,999), Insta-share projector (Rs 15,999) and Hasselblad True Zoom camera module (Rs 14,999).

Buyers can also go in for the Style Shells with the Wood and Ballistic nylon shell priced at Rs 1,099 (Rs 899 bundled) or the leather shell at Rs 1,599 (Rs 1,299 bundled)

Motorola recently launched the budget friendly Moto E3 Power for Indian consumers and now it is all set to launch its flagship smartphone. The Moto Z will be officially making its way on 4 October in India as the company has sent out invites confirming the launch day.

The company’s first ever modular smartphone made its debut at the Lenovo Tech World conference in June earlier this year. The smartphone currently has three variants; the Moto Z, Moto Z Force and Moto Z Play, but there is no confirmation if Moto will launch all three of them.

The main attraction of the Moto Z lineup is the 16 magnetic connector pins at the back where one can simply snap on ‘Moto Mods’. These Moto Mods are modules which add or enhance the capability of the smartphone. Some of them include battery packs, a JBL speaker, a Pico projector and a high-end Hasselblad camera. The mods are also expected to launch with the smartphone.

As far as the smartphones are concerned, the Moto Z features a 5.5-inch QHD (2560×1440) AMOLED display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor with 4GB RAM, 64GB of internal memory which is further expandable via microSD card, 4G LTE connectivity, a fingerprint scanner. In the camera department you get a 13MP unit at the back with with an f/1.8 aperture, laser autofocus, OIS and dual LED flash while on the front there is 5MP camera. Running on Android 6.0 Marshmallow the battery is rated at 2,600 mAh battery. Oh, and you don’t get a 3.5mm audio jack, so audio is routed via the USB Type-C port.

The Moto Z Force is pretty much similar in looks and design, it is slightly bulky and offers the shatter-shield protection just like the Moto X Force. Other differences include a larger 3.500mAh battery and a better 23MP camera on the back.

On the other hand, the Moto Z Play is a more nimble version and features a 5.5-inch display with a full HD resolution (1920×1080 pixels), a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor with 3GB of RAM and 32GB storage, a 16MP primary camera with dual-LED flash and a 3,510mAh battery.
