Massive DDoS Attack Against Dyn DNS Service Knocks Popular Sites Offline

Massive DDoS Attack Against Dyn DNS Service Knocks Popular Sites Offline

UPDATE — How an army of million of hacked Internet-connected smart devices almost broke the Internettoday.

Cyber attacks are getting evil and worst nightmare for companies day-by-day, and the Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack is one such attacks that cause a massive damage to any service.

Recently, the Internet witnessed a record-breaking largest DDoS attack of over 1 Tbps against France-based hosting provider OVH, and now the latest victim of the attack is none other than Dyn DNS provider.

A sudden outage of popular sites and services, including Twitter, SoundCloud, Spotify, and Shopify, for many users, is causing uproar online. It's because of a DDoS attack against the popular Domain Name System (DNS) service provider Dyn, according to a post on Ycombinator.

DNS act as the authoritative reference for mapping domain names to IP addresses. In other words, DNS is simply an Internet's phone book that resolves human-readable web addresses, like thehackernews.com, against IP addresses.

Dyn DNS is used by many websites and services as their upstream DNS provider, including Twitter, Spotify, SaneBox, Reddit, Box, Github, Zoho CRM, PayPal, Airbnb, Freshbooks, Wired.com, Pinterest, Heroku and Vox Media properties.

All of these sites and services are reportedly experiencing outages and downtime, either completely or partially.

Here's an internet outage map from Level3:

According to Dyn DNS, the DDOS started at 11:10 UTC and is mostly affecting its customers in the East Coast of the United States, specifically Managed DNS customers.
"We are aware of the ongoing service interruption of our Managed DNS network. For more information visit our status page," Dyn tweeted.
At the time, it's not clear who is behind this DDoS attack, but the company said its engineers are working on "mitigating" the issue.

Here's the statement posted by Dyn on its website:
"This attack is mainly impacting US East and is impacting Managed DNS customers in this region. Our Engineers are continuing to work on mitigating this issue.

Starting at 11:10 UTC on October 21th-Friday 2016 we began monitoring and mitigating a DDoS attack against our Dyn Managed DNS infrastructure. Some customers may experience increased DNS query latency and delayed zone propagation during this time. Updates will be posted as information becomes available.

Customers with questions or concerns are encouraged to reach out to our Technical Support Team."
What websites are down for you? Let us know in the comments below.

We'll update the story as soon as we get to hear more about the attack. Stay Tuned!

Apple’s Eddy Cue talks future of TV; calls them ‘Glorified VCRs’ that need a reinvention

Apple’s Eddy Cue talks future of TV; calls them ‘Glorified VCRs’ that need a reinvention

By
Apple’s senior VP of software and services Eddy Cue clearly does not like the current state of TV. At Vanity Fair’s New Establishment Summit, in a conversation with HBO CEO Richard Plepler, Cue called TVs nothing more than glorified VCRs.
Pressing on the need to for TVs to be reinvented, Cue said, “You live with a glorified VCR. You’re still setting things to record. There are 900 channels, but there’s nothing to watch.” While Cue acknowledged that there was great stuff to watch, the TV interface is what was making it more difficult, specially when it came to finding content.
“The ways you interface with TV are pretty brain dead,” said Cue. Of course he maintained that Apple TV with its App Store and Siri provide a better solution. He mentioned the example of HBO Now, which has around 1 million subscribers on Apple devices. He said that HBO Now provides a better navigational experience than cable box or satellite.
Cue hinted that Apple and HBO were two companies that were ‘at the beginning’ of their relationship. He suggested that TV will continue to evolve over the years.
Talking on competition from rivals such as Amazon and Netflix, Cue said that Apple was in a very competitive position in both music and video streaming as it hosts these services on its own platform.
Apple isn’t getting all the love in the TV streaming arena from all the major players though, thanks to Cue’s hard nosed tactics. Time Warner, Disney are just some of the TV networks which aren’t bowing down to Apple’s demands.

Volvo owner Geely launched a new car brand called Lynk & Co. The first car by this new brand is called the 01, and it totally re-imagines what a car should be. The car company is not centered around getting users to buy cars.
Instead, there are various payment models. You can subscribe to a car, and the company takes care of the insurance, service and maintenance for a monthly fee. You can hire a car, or rent yours out when not in use. You can lease a car or even just buy the car, if you really want to.
The technology for implementing these features have been available for some time. However, Lynk & Co is the first company to go ahead and implement it in a car. The intent is to break the expensive cycle of

TRAI fines Airtel, Vodafone, Idea for denial of interconnection to Jio

The Indian telecom regulator on Friday slapped heavy penalties on three telecom players — Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular — for not providing sufficient points of interconnections (PoI) to Reliance Jio.
It also said the action of the three operators showed “ulterior motive to stifle competition”.
In three similar letters to the three players, the watchdog — Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) — said it has recommended a penal action of Rs 50 crore per licence service area (LSA) (except Jammu & Kashmir) where PoI congestion exceeded the allowable limit of 0.5 per cent as reported by Airtel/Vodafone/Idea Cellular through emails in September 23.
In the case of Airtel and Vodafone, the fines imposed were for 21 LSAs, amounting to Rs 1050 crore each while in the case of Idea, the fine was Rs 950 crore for

Vodafone will make incoming calls on national roaming free of charge from Diwali

Vodafone will make incoming calls on national roaming free of charge from Diwali

To counter threat from Reliance Jio free phone call offer, telecom operator Vodafone India on Friday free incoming calls while roaming nationally for all its customers from Diwali. “As part of our ongoing 200 million customer celebration, providing free incoming on national roaming will ensure that our customers do not think twice while traveling out of town,” Vodafone India, Director – Commercial, Sandeep Kataria said in a statement.
Starting this Diwali, all Vodafone India customers travelling anywhere in the country can continue to talk worry free without having to cut short their conversations, the statement said. “Even though outgoing charges while roaming had become comparable to home charges, consumer research has shown that incoming charges while roaming have been a hindrance to worry free usage,” Kataria said.
The new entrant Reliance Jio is offering free voice telephony across the country, including outgoing calls as well which is a big challenge for the entrenched players who derive a bulk of their revenue from the voice business. State-run BSNL has been offering free incoming call during roaming since June 15, 2015. At present, most of the telecom operators charge a tariff for providing free incoming calls during roaming.

LG G6 will not be modular smartphone

LG G6 will not be modular smartphone

Representational image for smartphones.
By
LG launched its flagship smartphone, the G5, this year with a unique modular design. It was one of the first Android running smartphones that had the ability to swap a panel and replace it to add a new feature to the device.
The bottom part of the smartphone would pop out and you could attach a DAC or a camera control module. It did had a major issue though, one had to remove the battery along with the modules or what LG called ‘friends’. The swapping was not seamless. The smartphone was definitely a unique offering, but it didn’t do well. LG had big plans for the smartphone including a fuller ecosystem, but by the month of June it was clear that the smartphone was a failure. In fact the sales were so bad, the company fired a chunk of its smartphone designers.
Now according to a report, LG will not continue to use a modular design for the upcoming G6 flagship handset. Google had recently announced the end of Project Ara, which was a disappointment for many. LG taking the similar path is not surprising at all.
Motorola and Lenovo on the other had have a more promising modular smartphone strategy. Their new Moto Z smartphone along with the magnetically attachable Moto Mods seems to be more reliable and seamless. It has already opened up the Moto Mods design open for developers, which is good thing. But the real question here is, will the company manage to keep the modular smartphone dream running?

Microsoft India had launched a full-scale Cybersecurity Engagement Center (CSEC) in India. Located in Delhi, Microsoft says it will be first-of-its-kind center to bring together the company’s capabilities to foster deeper cybersecurity collaborations with public and private sector organizations to create a secure computing environment.
It already had a pilot project for about a year and over the last 12 months, the Microsoft cybersecurity engagement team says it met with over 100 organisations in India. And, based on those conversations, it has observed three common IT environment challenges for cybersecurity namely, unmanaged and unregulated IT assets usage, procurement and maintenance; poor knowledge of cyber hygiene among users within organizations; inability of companies to timely monitor, detect and remove cyber threats.
The CSEC in Delhi becomes the seventh center in the world and it is also said to function as a satellite to the company’s Redmond Digital Crimes Unit (DCU). Besides, the company has also rolled out a nationwide campaign to

New Apple MacBook Pro and Air lineup to be announced on 27 October: Here’s what to expect

New Apple MacBook Pro and Air lineup to be announced on 27 October: Here’s what to expect

By
After plenty of rumours, Apple has finally broken its silence on the launch of its much-awaited MacBook refresh. The new page that details the event is up on Apple’s website with the message “hello again”, inviting fans to join them on the live stream of the event set to take place on October 27 at 10AM PDT (which would be 10:30AM IST).
Like always Apple has not detailed or even hinted as to what it plans to reveal at the event. But with the new iPhones for the year already launched back in September, this indeed could be for the much-awaited MacBook refresh. We say much-awaited as Apple’s current generation of MacBooks (Air and Pros) offer fifth generation chipsets and the same old design as their predecessors.
From what we know through rumours and leaks so far, Apple may announce both a refreshed version of the MacBook Air and a redesigned MacBook Pro Series. 9to5Mac points out that we may see some newer hardware from the Mac lineup as well. The Mac Lineup received a refresh a few years ago, so don’t expect a redesign but just upgraded hardware with the Mac Pro, iMac desktops and the Mac Mini as well.
Japanese blog, Macotakara pointed out that Apple is already geared up to release its new range of MacBook Pros and a new MacBook Air by end of October as conveyed by a reliable Chinese supplier.

While the MacBook Pros are expected to arrive in 13-inch and 15-inch models, the same source also points out that Apple will kill the 11-inch MacBook Air. The reasons for the same seem to be related to the existence of the iPad Pro series. The 13-inch MacBook Air model is expected to see a complete redesign.
Other details hint that, the new MacBooks will be skipping on the standard USB ports and will go in for the USB Type C ports instead, along with support for the Thunderbolt 3 standard. The USB C ports will be used for charging, so it is indeed time to wave goodbye to the MagSafe connector. The MacBook Pro lineup is also expected to feature Touch ID and an OLED touch panel that sits over the keyboard.

Google, Ford and Honda among automakers against proposed self-driving car regulations in California

Google, Ford and Honda among automakers against proposed self-driving car regulations in California

Alphabet Inc’s Google unit and automakers objected on Wednesday to California proposals to set new, mandatory rules for testing self-driving cars in the state, which industry officials said could hobble their efforts in the home to much of self-driving vehicle testing and development. Automakers and Google raised a litany of concerns about California’s proposal at a hearing in Sacramento on Wednesday. They expressed opposition to the state proposal to require compliance with guidelines that federal regulators issued last month, but made voluntary.
They questioned why California would require a new autonomous vehicle data recorder and what data they would be required to test, and they objected to a proposal they said would force a 12-month delay between testing a vehicle and deploying it on public roads. Automakers also questioned whether police should be able to get any self-driving data within 24 hours without seeking a warrant or subpoena.
California regulatory policy is important to automakers and technology companies because of its impact on operations in the state, and because the policies enacted in the most populous U.S. state often influence what other states and other countries do. The proposed requirement that manufacturers generate a year of driverless testing data before applying for an operating permit drew objections from General Motors Co, Volkswagen AG, Honda Motor Co, Ford Motor Co, and Google.
The state’s approach “could greatly delay the benefits that self-driving vehicles can bring to safety and mobility for individuals,” said David Strickland, who heads the Self-Driving Coalition for Safer Streets that includes Google, Ford, Lyft, Uber Technologies Inc and Volvo Car Group. Brian Soublet, deputy director of the California DMV, said Wednesday the department wants concrete suggestions to help improve its proposal. Soublet said the department will be considering potential changes over the next several months but he did not give a timetable for finalizing the rules.
“The goal is making sure that we can get this life-saving technology out on the streets,” Soublet said. California’s proposal would allow for the absence of a human driver and a steering wheel in advanced self-driving cars. In December, California had proposed to require licensed drivers and controls in self-driving vehicles.
Ron Medford, director of safety for Google’s self-driving car project, said California’s proposal to require manufacturers to obtain local approval is “unworkable.” The rule could prevent manufacturers from testing a vehicle that can travel from one area to another. Advocacy group Consumer Watchdog urged California to prohibit autonomous vehicles without a human driver until federal regulators enact enforceable standards.

Ecuador cuts off Assange’s internet access over fears of interference in US elections

Ecuador cuts off Assange’s internet access over fears of interference in US elections

Ecuador says it has temporarily cut off internet access to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange over fears he was using it to interfere in the US presidential election. The move comes in the wake of the publication of leaked emails by WikiLeaks, including emails from the account of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton’s campaign adviser John Podesta.
The Ecuadorean Foreign Ministry on Tuesday said WikiLeaks’ documents could interfere in the electoral process. It said Ecuador “respects the principle of non-intervention in the internal affairs of other states” and had cut off the internet access available to Assange because “in recent weeks WikiLeaks has published a wealth of documents, impacting on the US election campaign.
“In that respect, Ecuador, exercising its sovereign right, has temporarily restricted access to part of its communications systems in its UK Embassy,” the statement said. Ecuador clarified the move was not a result of pressure from Washington. The US denied WikiLeaks’ accusations on Sunday that it had asked Ecuador to stop the site publishing documents about Hillary Clinton.
The Ecuador statement also reaffirmed the asylum granted to Assange and reiterated its intention “to safeguard his life and physical integrity until he reaches a safe place”. Assange’s internet access was cut off on Monday morning. Assange has sought asylum at London’s Ecuadorean embassy since 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden over sex assault allegation.
According to the latest leaked emails, Clinton told a Goldman Sachs conference she would like to intervene secretly in Syria. She made the remark in answer to a question from Lloyd Blankfein, the bank’s chief executive, in 2013 — months after she left office as the Secretary of State. “My view was you intervene as covertly as is possible for Americans to intervene,” she told employees of the bank in South Carolina, which had paid her about $225,000 to give a speech.

Uber now has 40 million monthly riders across the globe

Uber now has 40 million monthly riders across the globe

By
At the Vanity Fair’s New Establishment Summit in San Francisco, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick revealed some global stats and also spoke about the future of the taxi-booking service.
According to Fortune, Kalanick said that the company now has over 40 million riders worldwide. He also revealed that last month, the company paid somewhere between $1.5 – 2 billion to drivers, which is after taking the cut from the amount. Adding further, he said an Uber driver spends an average of $50 on service every month.
Uber was co-founded by Kalanick in 2009, and has launched different types of service ever since. One of the most recent ones, Uberpool, was launched only 2 years ago, but now represents about 20 percent of the total rides globally.
He also spoke about self-driving cars, which are believed to be the future of tech. We’ve seen Google, Apple and others testing the waters in this space. “We’re at the very beginning stages of becoming a robotics company,” he said. If you remember, Uber had acquired self-driving truck startup Otta, and also teamed with Volvo. Uber’s move reflected its eagerness to advance in self-driving technology. If its ambitions are realized, these vehicles could over time reduce its biggest cost, paying drivers. He said that moving forward, autonomy will be critical. However, he also said that the company never intends to own all the Uber cars in the future.
Earlier this year, we also saw reports around Uber Technologies merger with its China business rival Didi Chuxing. The reports had arrived just after Uber decided to invest $500 million in its mapping project. This is an attempt by the company to separate itself from Google Maps and in-turn make a more detailed mapping system for the ride-hailing service.

Gartner predicts that global IT spending will reach $3.5 trillion in 2017

Gartner predicts that global IT spending will reach $3.5 trillion in 2017

Driven by growth in software and IT services revenue, worldwide IT spending is forecast to reach $3.5 trillion in 2017 — up 2.9 percent from 2016 estimated spending of $3.4 trillion, market research firm Gartner said on Wednesday. Software spending is projected to grow six percent in 2016. It will grow another 7.2 percent in 2017 to total $357 billion, the report said, adding that IT services spending is on pace to grow 3.9 percent in 2016 to reach $597 billion and increase 4.8 percent in 2017 to reach $943 billion.
While discussing the impact of Brexit on IT investment at the “Gartner Symposium/ITxpo” event here, John-David Lovelock, research vice president at Gartner, said that the immediate impact of Brexit has caused modest growth in IT spending to turn negative for 2016.
“Without the UK, global IT spending growth would have been modestly positive at 0.2 per cent in 2016, but with the UK included, IT spending is expected to decrease 0.3 per cent. The immediate impact of the British pound will also cause the IT spending patterns to shift as prices for IT will increase,” Lovelock added.
While talking about IT spending trends in the wake of the US presidential election, Lovelock said that there is a slight pause in IT spending leading into the election and then a relief in spending, subsequently.
