Apple considering to team up with Foxconn to bid for Toshiba’s chip division, says report

Apple considering to team up with Foxconn to bid for Toshiba’s chip division, says report

Image: Reuters
Apple Inc is considering teaming up with its supplier Foxconn to bid for Toshiba Corp’s semiconductor business, public broadcaster NHK said on Friday – the latest twist in the sale of the world’s second-biggest flash memory chipmaker.
Apple is considering investing at least several billion dollars to take a stake of more than 20 percent in a plan that would have Toshiba maintain a partial stake to keep the business under US and Japanese control, NHK reported, citing an unidentified source.
The proposal is aimed at allaying the Japanese government’s concerns over any transfer of sensitive technology to investors it deems a risk to national security, it said.
Apple was not immediately available to comment. Taiwan’s Foxconn, formally known as Hon Hai Precision Industry, declined to comment.
The report comes as Western Digital Corp, Toshiba’s partner and one of the bidders of its chip business, warned this week that the Japanese firm is violating a joint venture contract in plans to sell to its chip unit, and urged that it be given exclusive negotiating rights.
Toshiba has narrowed down the field of bidders for its chip unit to four suitors, sources have said previously.
They are US chipmaker Broadcom Ltd, which has partnered with private equity firm Silver Lake Partners LP; South Korean chip maker SK Hynix; Foxconn, the world’s largest contract electronics maker, and Western Digital.

A lot of 32-bit apps will stop working after Apple iOS 11 launches in September

A lot of 32-bit apps will stop working after Apple iOS 11 launches in September

We have heard of Apple killing support for 32-bit apps lately. This became clearer after the launch of iOS 10.3 where Apple put out clear warnings through pop-up messages hinting that older apps will not work with future versions of iOS. Now there’s more news on this front and it even includes speculation about future Apple processors not including 32-bit support altogether.
9to5mac reports that Apple will be making a drastic change this fall. A prominent developer Steven Troughton-Smith put out tweets explaining that this Apple will cease to support these older apps. While hundreds of 32-bit apps continue to work right now (with the warning pop-up) these may no longer work or show up on the App Store after iOS 11 come out in September this year.
Smith puts it out clearly that developers either need to upgrade of they will be chucked out of the iOS ecosystem once users upgrade to iOS 11.
Additionally, Smith also speculated that A-Series chips from Apple in the future may not even include support for 32-bit instructions. With these missing at the hardware level in upcoming iPhones, there is literally no future for these 32-bit apps.
Indeed, the move comes as no surprise as Apple has been warning users about coaxing their app developers to upgrade their apps. The move comes as Apple seems on a warpath to remove older, problematic and abandoned apps (ones that haven’t been updated for years) from its App Store in a bid to maintain higher app quality standards over quantity. Since the announcement in September, Apple has managed to purge about 50,000 such apps from the App Store. iOS 11,l with its new standards, is expected to reveal a better kill rate for abandoned apps.
If you are unsure about which apps on your iOS device are 32-bit, you can simply head to Settings> General> About> Applications. If you are able to open the ‘applications’ page, then you do have one or more 32-bit apps running on your device and they’ll be listed there. If not, you will simply not be able to open the Applications section, which means that you have nothing to worry about.
If you do find some 32-bit apps that you can’t live without, you’d better hope that the app’s developer will listen to your piteous pleas for an update. If not, tough luck.

Apple files patent for new AirPods case that will charge other devices

Apple files patent for new AirPods case that will charge other devices

The Apple AirPods have been criticised for their design, battery life and most of all, availability. But it seems Apple has big plans for their awkward wireless earphones. The company has filed for a patent around the AirPods and its something quite out of the ordinary.
According to the patent documents, a special case for the Airpods will offer provision for inductive charging. This means it could provide power to devices such as Apple Watch, iPods, iPhones, iPads and even MacBooks in the future.
The schematics of the case show a watch on top of the case, which is probably the most suitable device. The current Apple Watch Series 2 comes with a 273 mAh battery while the current AirPods case has a 398 mAh battery. If Apple were to make a slightly bigger case, it could very well charge the AirPods and the watch.
The patent goes on to say, “Such devices can include, for example, portable music players (e.g., MP3 devices and Apple’s iPod devices), portable video players (e.g., portable DVD players), cellular telephones (e.g., smart telephones such as Apple’s iPhone devices), video cameras, digital still cameras, projection systems (e.g., holographic projection systems), gaming systems, PDAs, as well as tablet (e.g., Apple’s iPad devices), laptop (e.g. MacBooks) or other mobile computers. Some of these devices can be configured to provide audio, video or other data or sensory output.”
But in making a bigger case, Apple could risk the factor of portability. Of course, this is just a patent filing and it doesn’t mean that we are going to see an AirPods case with inductive charging anytime soon.

Apple to focus on chip design in-house to reduce costs; to stop sourcing chips from Imagination

Apple to focus on chip design in-house to reduce costs; to stop sourcing chips from Imagination

Image: Reuters
Apple Inc’s decision to stop licensing graphics chips from Imagination Technologies Group Plc is the clearest example yet of the iPhone maker’s determination to take greater control of the core technologies in its products – both to guard its hefty margins and to position it for future innovations, especially in so-called augmented reality.
The strategy, analysts say, has already reduced Apple’s dependence on critical outside suppliers like ARM Holdings Plc, now owned by SoftBank Group Corp.
Apple once relied heavily on ARM to design the main processor for the iPhone, but it now licenses only the basic ARM architecture and designs most of the chip itself.
More recently, when Apple bought the headphone company Beats Electronics, part of a $3 billion deal in 2014, it ripped out the existing, off-the-shelf communications chips and replaced them with its own custom-designed W1 Bluetooth chip.
“Apple clearly got rid of all the conventional suppliers and replaced about five chips with one,” said Jim Morrison, vice president of TechInsights, a firm that examines the chips inside electronics devices.
“Today we do much more in-house development of fundamental technologies than we used to,” Apple Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri said at a February conference. “Think of the work we do on processors or sensors. We can push the envelope on innovation. We have better control over timing, over cost and over quality.”
Most vendors of consumer electronics products rely on outside suppliers for chip design and development, primarily because it is extremely expensive. That has created huge opportunities for companies like ARM, Qualcomm Inc and Nvidia Corp, which have developed core technologies for processing, communications and graphics that are used by scores of vendors.
Now, though, Apple is so big that it can economically create its own designs, or license small pieces of others’ work and build on it. As with ARM and Qualcomm, the actual manufacturing of the chips is still contracted out to a semiconductor foundry, such as those run by Samsung Electronics and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd.
MOVE FAST, SAVE MONEY
Bringing more of the design work in-house cuts complexity, people familiar with the processes say. Instead of managing one or more design teams and then a fabricator, Apple has only to manage the fabricator.
It may also help the company move faster – and save money – as it focuses on new technologies such as virtual and augmented reality. Apple CEO Tim Cook has indicated that Apple plans to integrate augmented reality into its products, which makes 3-D sensors and graphics chips like Imagination’s especially important.
Even before formally cutting off Imagination, Apple had given hints that it was preparing to design its own graphics processors. Specifically, it introduced a piece of its own code called Metal for app developers. App developers use Metal to make their apps talk to the graphics chip on the iPhone.
By putting a piece of Apple-designed code between app developers and the phone’s chip, Apple has made it possible to swap out the chip without interrupting how the developers work. That could also make it easier to bridge the gap for developers between the graphics chips on Apple’s phones and its desktop computers, which currently require some separate coding.
“By promoting Metal instead of relying on other existing standards, Apple is not only able to control what graphics chip functionality is exposed at its own pace, but also blur the line for developers between coding for desktop and mobile GPUs,” said Pius Uzamere, the founder of a virtual reality startup called Ether.
Taking control of the iPhone’s chips can also help Apple keep costs down, which is especially important as it gears up for a feature-laden new iPhone this fall. Timothy Arcuri of Cowen & Co said in a research note that he thinks the curved screens expected on the new phone could add as much as $50 in cost, for example.
Shebly Seyrafi, an analyst at FBN Securities, estimates that the average price of an iPhone increased only 1 percent to $695 last quarter, while costs increased 8 percent to $420, resulting in an iPhone gross margin of 39.6 percent. That is down from the 44 percent average gross margin for iPhones in 2015, according to Seyrafi’s estimates.
Apple spends only $75 million a year on licensing fees for Imagination’s chips. But licensing fees to chip designers, taken together, are a significant cost for the iPhone. Apple recently sued Qualcomm for $1 billion over licensing terms for its communications chips – which Apple would have trouble designing in-house because of patent issues.

Apple updates Apple Music for Android with a new UI to remove the clutter

Apple updates Apple Music for Android with a new UI to remove the clutter

Apple has revamped the Android version of Apple Music to bring “greater clarity and simplicity” to the app. The new update revamps the user interface of the app while bumping the version number to 2.0 for the app.
It is unclear if the revamp is limited to cosmetic changes that just changes the UI elements to remove the clutter or if it extends to the backend and how the services are executed in the app.
Here is the detailed changelog that came with the update:
  • Now Playing. Read lyrics for songs as you listen.
  • Library. Navigate your music easily and see the Downloaded Music you can play offline.
  • For You. Get recommendations for playlists, albums, and more—based on music you love.
  • Browse. Listen to new music first, plus playlists for any mood or activity.
  • Radio. Tune in to Beats 1 shows or listen to stations for any genre.
The new version seems to have far lesser menus than the older menus and the scolling has reduced significantly.
According to a report by Android Police, the app seems to be more responsive and faster. One thing to note here is that Apple Music costs significantly cheaper in India than in United States.
In comparison, Apple Music subscription costs about Rs 120 per month for individuals, Rs 190 per month for family up to six members and Rs 60 per month for students in contrast to $9.99 it costs for individuals per month in United States.

Apple, Amazon and Google have joined the bidding for Toshiba’s chip unit

Apple, Amazon and Google have joined the bidding for Toshiba’s chip unit

Image: Reuters
Apple Inc, Amazon.com Inc and Google have joined bidding for Toshiba’s NAND flash memory unit, vying with others for the Japanese firm’s prized semiconductor operation, the Yomiuri Shimbun daily reported on Saturday.
Toshiba shareholders on Thursday agreed to split off its NAND flash memory business, paving the way for a sale to raise at least $9 billion to cover U.S. nuclear unit charges that threaten the conglomerate’s future.
The Yomiuri newspaper said bidding prices from Apple, Amazon or Google, owned by Alphabet Inc, were not known.
The Nikkei business daily reported on Friday that U.S. private equity firm Silver Lake Partners and U.S. chipmaker Broadcom Ltd have offered Toshiba about 2 trillion yen ($18 billion) for the unit.
About 10 potential bidders are interested in buying a stake in the microchip operation, a source with knowledge of the planned sale told Reuters earlier.
Suitors include Western Digital Corp, which operates a chip plant with Toshiba in Japan, Micron Technology Inc, South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix Inc and financial investors.
Toshiba officials were not immediately available for comment.

Apple will start assembling iPhones in India within a month, says Karnataka IT Minister Kharge

Apple will start assembling iPhones in India within a month, says Karnataka IT Minister Kharge

Image: Reuters
Apple Inc will be ready to start assembling high-end iPhones in the city in less than a month to boost its chances of gaining a foothold in the fast growing Indian market, Karnataka IT Minister Priyank Kharge said on Thursday.
“In less than a month, we will have something out – Apple will start assembling and making its high-end iPhones at its plant in the city. Taiwanese contract manufacturer Wistron Corp will help Apple in doing so,” he told PTI in Bengaluru.
Kharge said making iPhones in India would help Apple lower prices, which will help it gain a foothold in the fast growing Indian market.
“Assembling and making of iPhones in Bengaluru will boost Apple’s chances of gaining a foothold in the fast growing Indian market because it will allow the company to lower prices,” he said.
Karnataka government has been in talks with the Centre for strengthening the ecosystem even as Apple is negotiating with it for its next level of production in India, he said.
Apple wants to bring its component manufacturers to India to make parts and export finished phones and is seeking tax concessions on import of key components. However the Indian government has rejected most of the demands of the US company.
Kharge said if the Centre was keen on taking on China, it should not give special treatment to Apple alone, but to other players, including Samsung and Lenovo, if they are desirous of opening a manufacturing units in India, especially Karnataka.
“My position with the central government has been don’t give special treatment to Apple alone, but treat other players equally. Open the entire ecosystem for high-end manufacturing of electronics if you really want to compete with China and Taiwan,” he said.
Kharge said government should also give companies, including Apple, certain timelines, subsidies and incentives to create a level-playing field for them.
“The government should give companies a timeline, say in 10 years they should be able to manufacture 100 percent of phones and its components by procuring them from the local market. Such a timeline should be given because we don’t have that environment now,” he said.
“The government should also give companies subsidies and incentives to create a level-playing field for them to strengthen the Indian ecosystem,” Kharge said.
Asked about the Stayzilla case, whose co-founder Yogendra Vasupal was arrested for alleged non-payment of dues filed by a Chennai based advertisement agency, Kharge said it should be a learning curve for startups to work under the parameters of the Indian legal system.
Vasupal was arrested on 15 March.

Hackers threaten to wipe “hundreds of millions” of iPhones, Apple says they can’t

Hackers threaten to wipe “hundreds of millions” of iPhones, Apple says they can’t

Reuters
A bunch of hackers calling themselves the “Turkish Crime Family” had threatened to wipe “hundreds of millions” of iPhones if Apple didn’t pay them money. Apple calls their bluff.
The hacker group claimed to have access to over 300 million Apple accounts (including @icloud.com accounts), some of the group claimed 559 million accounts. They demanded that Apple give them $75,000 in Bitcoin, Ether, or $100,000 in iTunes gift cards. Apple was given until 7 April to respond.
Motherboard spoke to the hackers and could not verify their claims. While the hackers claim to have the data, they could not furnish proof of possession. The hackers also showed Motherboard screenshots of alleged conversations with Apple support staff, but since they didn’t share the actual emails, the screenshots aren’t easy to trust.
Apple refused to comment on the issue till it conducted an investigation, which concluded today. Apple’s investigations have led them to conclude that Apple accounts are perfectly safe that that hackers never actually breached them.
Fortune has learned that Apple believes that the data claimed to be from the breach came from third-party sources that may have been compromised. However, the iPhone-maker does take the opportunity to remind users to use secure passwords, two-factor authentication and to not reuse the same password.

Apple might be looking to bring USB-C support to the iPhone: Report

Apple might be looking to bring USB-C support to the iPhone: Report

By
A report in the Wall Street Journal suggests that Apple is bringing USB-C to the iPhone. It’s surprising news, given Apple’s traditional reluctance to adopt standardised ports on its iPhone.
Before you get your hopes up, however, The Verge does add that the WSJ report’s wording is not very clear. The report could be interpreted to suggest that Apple is not dumping Lightning in favour of USB-C, but that it’s replacing the USB-A end of the connector with USB-C.
The latter assumption makes more sense because Apple very “courageously” dumped all USB-A ports on its current MacBook lineup and replaced them with USB-C, without taking the trouble to provide adapters.
If you buy a MacBook and an iPhone today, it’s impossible to connect the two without buying at least one adapter.
Another pointer for the latter assumption is that Apple has only recently released its Lightning EarPods and has licensed the ports to accessory makers for making Lightning-compatible headphones and accessories.
USB-C is a better standard than USB 3.0 because it supports a much higher bandwidth and, more importantly, can handle far more power.
Moving to USB-C will lend Apple users at least some peace of mind, as they won’t have to purchase adapters to hook up their iPhones to their MacBooks.
It’ll be certainly be a welcome change if Apple decides to dump Lightning for USB-C, but that’s likely a very remote possibility.

Apple is working with Germany’s SAP to make a tool for helping devs build business apps

Apple is working with Germany’s SAP to make a tool for helping devs build business apps

Image: Reuters
Apple Inc and German software maker SAP SE will release a tool aimed at helping developers build iPhone apps for big businesses, the two companies said on Monday.
The software tool, to be released on 30 March, is designed to let developers easily feed data between SAP’s business-oriented software systems and Apple’s consumer-oriented iOS mobile platform.
Currently, most of SAP’s systems are used on personal computers rather than on mobile devices. SAP plans to change that by working directly with Apple on software tools that will make it easier to access data on SAP systems from apps on an iPhone or iPad, an effort that began last spring.
The tool could, for example, let employees log into business apps with fingerprint readers common on iPhones rather than a password, or replace bulky inventory scanning guns used in warehouses with iPhones.
“The collaboration between our two firms is unparalleled from an engineering standpoint,” said Rick Knowles, a senior vice president at SAP. “Every five to six weeks, we’ve put our developers in the room with Apple’s lead engineers to do a code-level review.”
With growth in iPhone sales losing steam, Apple has increased its efforts to sell to large businesses. In 2014, Apple launched a partnership with IBM Corp to help build custom iOS applications for businesses. In 2016, Apple made a deal with Cisco to make iPhones work better on Cisco’s networking gear, and it also partnered with Deloitte & Touche LLP to encourage more businesses to build iOS applications.
The SAP partnership also gives iOS developers a new way to gain revenue in an era when most of the App Store’s growth is driven by downloads in China and by game makers. Apple said earlier this year that developers made $20 billion from the App Store in 2016, an increase of 40 percent from 2015.
But according to App Annie, an analytics firm that tracks App Store metrics, iOS downloads were up only 12 percent in 2016 to 30 billion apps, and 80 percent of download growth for iOS apps came from China. Moreover, 75 percent of revenue generated in the App Store came from games, App Annie reported.
Business apps would represent new territory for many of these developers. And being able to run workplace software could also help Apple compete against Microsoft Corp , whose Windows software still dominates in the corporate world.
