Source Code for CIA’s Tool to Track Whistleblowers Leaked by Wikileaks

Friday, April 28, 2017 Swati Khandelwal

Wikileaks has just published a new batch of the Vault 7 leak, exposing the documentation and source code for a CIA project known as "Scribbles."

Scribbles, a.k.a. the "Snowden Stopper," is a piece of software allegedly designed to embed 'web beacon' tags into confidential documents, allowing the spying agency to track whistleblowers and foreign spies.

Since March, as part of its "Vault 7" series, the Whistleblowing website has published thousands of documents and other confidential information that the whistleblower group claims came from the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

The CIA itself described Scribbles as a "batch processing tool for pre-generating watermarks and inserting those watermarks into documents that are apparently being stolen by FIO (foreign intelligence officers) actors."

Here's How Scribbles Tool Works:
Scribbles is coded in C# programming language and generates a random watermark for each document, inserts it into the document, saves all processed documents in an output directory, and creates a log file that identifies the watermarks inserted into every document.

This technique works exactly in the same way as the "tracking pixel" works, where a tiny pixel-sized image is embedded inside an email, allowing marketers and companies to keep track of how many users have seen the advertisement.

Using this tool CIA inserts a tiny uniquely generated file, hosted on a CIA-controlled server, to the classified documents "likely to be stolen."

So, every time the watermarked document is accessed by anyone, including potential whistleblowers, it will secretly load an embedded file in the background, which creates an entry on the CIA's server, containing unique information about the one who accessed it, including the time stamp and his/her IP address.

"It generates a random watermark for each document, inserts that watermark into the document, saves all such processed documents in an output directory, and creates a log file which identifies the watermarks inserted into each document," Scribbles' user guide manual reads.

Scribbles Only Works with Microsoft Office Products
The user manual also specifies that the tool is intended for off-line preprocessing of Microsoft Office documents. So, if the watermarked documents are opened in any other application like OpenOffice or LibreOffice, they may reveal watermarks and URLs to the user.

According to the documentation, "the Scribbles document watermarking tool has been successfully tested on…Microsoft Office 2013 (on Windows 8.1 x64), documents from Office versions 97–2016 (Office 95 documents will not work!) [and]...documents that are not be locked forms, encrypted, or password-protected."However, since the hidden watermarks are loaded from a remote server, this technique should work only when the user accessing the marked documents is connected to the Internet.

WikiLeaks notes that the latest released version of Scribbles (v1.0 RC1) dated March 1, 2016, which indicates it was in use up until at least last year and seemingly meant to remain classified until 2066.

More technical details of Scribble can be found in the User Guide.

So far, Wikileaks has revealed the "Year Zero" batch which uncovered CIA hacking exploits for popular hardware and software, the "Dark Matter" batch which focused on hacking exploits the agency designed to target iPhones and Macs, the "Marble" batch, and the "Grasshopper" batch that reveal a framework, allowing the agency to easily create custom malware for breaking into Microsoft's Windows and bypassing antivirus protection.

Apple starts selling refurbished iPhones online, but not in India

Apple starts selling refurbished iPhones online, but not in India

By
For those who want to own an iPhone but the iPhone 7 won’t fit their budget, here’s some good news. 9To5Mac points out that Apple has started selling previous-gen iPhones, but refurbished, at lower prices on its online store.
apple_store
A refurbished iPhone 6s, which is still a pretty good contender in the market today, is selling at $449 that is roughly Rs 30,000 for the 16GB model, and if you want the bigger iPhone 6s Plus than the 16GB model will cost $529 (approx Rs 35,300). The 64Gb iPhone 6s Plus is priced at $589 (approx Rs 39,300). All come with free shipping and returns, and are available in all four colors. So, you would save roughly $110 that is about Rs 6,600 on iPhone 6s Plus models, and $80 (approx Rs 5,300) on the iPhone 6s. However, a 64GB iPhone 6s variant isn’t available in the refurbished form.
So, apart from the discounted rates that measure up to 15 percent, users also get a one-year factory warranty. The company also claims that the refurbished units won’t ship with older batteries, rather, they will come equipped with newer ones.
You can check out the Apple store for refurbished products here.

Xiaomi reportedly building a smartphone with flexible display

Xiaomi reportedly building a smartphone with flexible display

Joining the race to build a bendable smartphone, Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is reportedly working on its own version of such a device.
According to Inquirer, Xiaomi’s device made its public debut over the internet through a 30-second video posted last week.
The video, courtesy of Gizmodo China, did not show the phone being bent but rather a bent screen that is very responsive to touch.
Flexible displays or foldable, bendable smartphones are the future and earlier this year, another Chinese major Lenovo became the first company to display two futuristic concepts: a foldable smartphone that can be turned into a wearable device and a bendable tablet that becomes a phablet.
Apart from Lenovo, Korean smartphone-maker Samsung has been working on foldable displays for years and is reported to be ready to launch its first foldable smartphone in 2017.
Apple has also gone for patents that suggest it is set to develop iPhones with curved screens.

Apple reportedly prepping three new iPad Pro models for spring 2017

By Shawn Knight on October 3, 2016, 1:30 PM

Apple is prepping a trio of new iPad Pro models that’ll be ready sometime next spring according to a recent report from Japanese blog Mac Otakara.

The site, which cites “reliable sources,” claims a new 7.9-inch Pro model will succeed the iPad mini 4. It’s rumored to have a Smart Connector like the one found on the current 9.7 and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models, a True Tone display, four speakers and a 12-megapixel rear camera. The report doesn’t mention support for the Apple Pencil although my guess is that it will support the stylus.

The existing 9.7-inch iPad Pro will reportedly be bumped up to 10.1 inches and will pack a quad-microphone array as will the other two models. A refreshed 12.9-inch iPad Pro will also carry a True Tone display and a 12-megapixel rear-facing iSight camera with a True Tone flash.

Unlike the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, the next batch of iPad Pros will continue to offer a 3.5mm headphone jack. It’s a bit odd that Apple is pushing to eliminate the jack on its smartphones but keep it on the tablet. It’s unclear if Apple will replace the physical home button with a stationary one as it has done with the new iPhones.

The report is somewhat in line with renowned Apple analyst Ming Chi-Kuo who says a 10.5-inch iPad Pro, not a 10.1-inch model, is inbound.

No word yet on potential pricing or a solid launch date.

1. How Old (Web): Upload a Photo to See How Old You Look

There is now a robot that can look at a photo of you and try to guess your age. More importantly for the ego factor, it’s a reality check about how old the average person thinks you look!

How Old is a cool Microsoft project that relies on the big data and personal data economy to make smart connections. By crunching the numbers from different data points, the robot has gathered signs that mark age on a human face. It then takes your photo and looks for those points on your face. An Apple employee has revealed that the company is developing iPhone 8 hardware at a facility in Israel. This employee also added that the employees at the Israeli facility work on all new Apple products.
This information was revealed to a Business Insider reporter in Israel. The Apple office in question is located in Herzliya, Israel, just 15km from Tel Aviv.
While the employee didn’t reveal much information on the devices being worked on, he apparently used the words “iPhone 8,” lending credence to rumours that Apple’s upcoming iPhone will be a radically redesigned iPhone 8 rather than an iPhone 7s.
Rumours suggest that the new iPhone will have an edge-to-edge screen with curved glass, a flexible OLED panel and that it will use an all-glass body rather than an aluminium one.
Business Insider reports that the employee solders components for Apple and that he revealed that the new iPhone will be “different” from existing iPhones. He also mentioned that the new iPhone will have a better camera and that nothing is assembled in Israel.
The reporter asked around and determined that employees at the Israeli facility work on the hardware side, “verifications, something like that.”
The facility reportedly works on the chipset, storage system and camera systems used by Apple’s iPhones. Tim Cook also claims that the facility is the second-largest research and development facility that is maintained by Apple.
