Nokia 3310 in a 3G variant listed on a Swedish website; HMD Global does not confirm

Nokia 3310 in a 3G variant listed on a Swedish website; HMD Global does not confirm

Nokia hit the right nostalgia notes when it announced a revamped version of the 3310 feature phone along with its new range of Android smartphones at MWC (Mobile World Congress) earlier this year. The handset was touted to offer a long lasting battery and also loaded with the ever popular phone game ‘Snake’.
However, there was one issue with the handset, it only supported 2G networks.
The smartphone era has ushered in high-speed mobile data and slowly 2G networks are getting phased out in certain countries. But according to a recently spotted listing, the upcoming Nokia 3310 might arrive in a 3G flavour.
A website of a Swedish retailer has listed the 3310 in 2G and 3G versions and is currently accepting pre-orders for both. The pricing of the variants differ as the 2G version has retailing at 699 Swedish Krona (Rs 5,100 approx) while the 3G version has a price of 899 Swedish Krona (Rs 6,600 approx).
HMD on the other hand doesn’t acknowledge the existence of a 3G version of the Nokia 3310 and said that the 3310 remains a 2G phone. The retailer is still accepting pre-orders despite HMD’s official statement.
So is there actually a 3G variant of the 3310? We will have to wait as the listing suggests the handset will be available in May.

MWC 2017: Here is how you can play the iconic Nokia Snake game on Facebook Messenger

MWC 2017: Here is how you can play the iconic Nokia Snake game on Facebook Messenger

By
Nokia has announced the launch of the iconic and legendary Nokia Snake game for Facebook Messenger users. The game is an iconic and instant reminder at being one of the very first mobile games in the era of dumb phones which predated the colour-display mobile phones. Even though the company has announced the launch of Snake game in colour with the reborn Nokia 3310, users can play the Nokia Snake game in all its mono colour glory in the Facebook Messenger app.

One thing to note is that the game is not available for everyone because of the limited availability of Facebook Games. Facebook Messenger Games are only available in Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Sweden, Great Britain, Canada, United States, Japan, Netherlands, Australia, Austria, Latvia, Germany, Ireland, Belgium, New Zealand, France, Singapore, Finland, Hong Kong, Russian Federation, Estonia, Taiwan, Slovenia, Puerto Rico, Cyprus, Israel, Lithuania, Spain, and Italy at the time of writing. A wider rollout in other countries has not been announced but is expected to soon follow.
Nokia Snake Facebook Messenger
For the people who can play Facebook Games, go to the Facebook Messenger on your Android or iOS device and tap on the ‘Games’ button, you may have on ‘More’ button to get to the ‘Games’ tab but it will be on the list. After tapping on the ‘Games’ button, you will be greeted with a list of games available for you to play and you will find Nokia ‘Snake’ on the top of the list. The procedure is the same while using Facebook Messenger on your desktop.
If you still can’t wait to play the game, we have got you covered as you can access the ‘Snake’ game despite Facebook games not available for users in India. To do this, you need to ensure that Facebook Messenger App is updated. This procedure is tried and tested on Android smartphone devices.
After updating the Facebook Messenger app to the latest available version, clear the ‘Data’ and ‘Cache’ for Facebook Messenger from the ‘Apps’ submenu from the Settings page of the smartphone. The option to clear the ‘Data’ and ‘Cache’ will be available under the ‘Storage’ option in the ‘App info’ section of the app. After clearing the ‘Data’ and ‘Cache’, you need to install any free VPN app for example ‘Opera VPN‘ and set the location as ‘United States’ or ‘Canada’ in the VPN.

Once the location is set as ‘United States’ in the VPN app, head to Facebook Messenger and login using your account details. Once you login, you can now access the ‘Games’ option and head to the ‘Games’ section to play ‘Snake’ as mentioned above.

MWC 2017: Nokia 3310 launch excitement ensures Dumbphones are still relevant in our high tech lives

MWC 2017: Nokia 3310 launch excitement ensures Dumbphones are still relevant in our high tech lives

Image: Nokia
Dumbphones – handsets that just make calls and send texts – were set to disappear as technology moved on, but they have survived in emerging markets and among nostalgics of simpler devices in the West.
Their continued appeal was underscored on Sunday in Barcelona on the sidelines of the Mobile World Congress, the world’s biggest mobile expo, as Nokia unveiled a revamped version of its iconic 3310 model, more than a decade after it was phased out.
Dumbphones remain useful to telecom operators to “relaunch or accelerate” mobile phone use as they are relatively inexpensive, said Julien Miniconi, a telecoms expert at consulting firm Wavestone.
“It makes sense especially in countries where the network is not great,” he added.
Last year 1.5 billion smartphones were sold around the world, according to research firm Gartner.
But the dumbphone market is still significant, with nearly 400 million sold in 2016.
In certain emerging markets such as India, their sales still outstrip smartphones.
Basic phones accounted for over 55 percent of all mobiles sold the third quarter of 2016 in the world’s second most populous country, according to the International Data Corporation, a market research firm.
And dumbphone sales are continuing to rise in this major market by about four percent per year.
‘Deluge of emails’
Even in developed nations where the telecom market is mature, the phones continue to sell.
“Today they are niche markets, either for those looking for vintage or for those who are anti mobile internet or old people,” said Thomas Husson, a mobile analyst at Forrester, a research group.
Young kids also use them as a first phone. Some people use them as secondary phone to lend to visiting friends and family from another country and avoid roaming charges.
British actor Eddie Redmayne, who won an Oscar in 2015 for his role as scientist Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, made headlines as he became the latest in a growing band of smartphone refuseniks.
“It was a reaction against being glued permanently to my iPhone during waking hours. The deluge of emails was constant and I found myself trying to keep up in real time, at the expense of living in the moment,” the 35-year-old said of his decision to go back to a less sophisticated phone.
Within any age group, it’s not hard to find people who refuse to join the smartphone revolution.
“I have no interest in a smartphone – it’s expensive, fragile and I don’t see the use for it,” said Sandrine, 39, a Paris-based illustrator.
“There is also the whole commercial aspect as well, with the need to update phones all the time, without mentioning the opacity of work conditions in China” where many smartphones are made, she added.
‘Halo effect’
Germany’s Deutsche Telekom includes several basic phones in its catalogue to meet the needs of clients “who just want to be reachable”, said a spokeswoman for the operator.
Nokia’s original 3310 sold nearly 120 million units worldwide, making it one of the world’s best-selling mobiles, but it is unlikely the revamped version unveiled Sunday, which includes internet access, will post similar sales.
HMD Global, the Finnish start-up which bought the rights to the Nokia brand last year and is making the phones, is seeking publicity for the three other smartphones which it unveiled alongside the new 3310, said Forrester analyst Thomas Husson.
“It is a way to create a halo effect around the other models by reviving talk about the Nokia brand,” he said.
Ian Fogg, head of mobile at research firm IHS, said that HMD, as a start-up, “needs to leverage the warm memories (of the 3310) and show that they are innovating too. They don’t want to be seen as a heritage brand.”

Nokia unveils Mika, a digital assistant that’s meant only for telecom operators

Nokia unveils Mika, a digital assistant that’s meant only for telecom operators

Image: Reuters
Finnish telecommunications giant Nokia has created a customised digital assistant “MIKA” that will improve telecom operators’ efficiency by providing engineers faster access to critical information.
MIKA that stands for ‘Multi-purpose Intuitive Knowledge Assistant’ — is the first digital assistant trained specifically for the telecom industry, designed to provide automated assistance that saves time and frees highly skilled workers to focus on critical tasks.
“MIKA taps into the power of the Nokia AVA platform to provide quick and accurate answers, avoiding time wasted on fruitless searches. It is customised to support the specific needs of telecoms, and can deliver recommendations based on experience from networks around the world,” said Igor Leprince, Head of Global Services at Nokia, in a statement.
MIKA combines augmented intelligence with automated learning to provide access to an extensive range of tools, documents and data sources.
These include the Nokia AVA knowledge library, a repository of best practices gathered from Nokia projects around the world.
Using the knowledge library MIKA can provide recommendations based on similar issues seen in other networks.
MIKA is available via a web interface and mobile agent so that engineers can tap into its knowledge base, wherever they are.
In addition to launching MIKA, Nokia introduces ‘Predictive Repair’, a service that will enable operators to reduce costs and improve network quality by moving away from break-fix approaches to hardware maintenance.
“The care service can predict hardware failures and recommend replacements up to 14 days in advance, with up to 95 per cent accuracy,” the company said.

Pre-orders for the Nokia 6 cross the 250,000 mark on Chinese retail site JD.com

Pre-orders for the Nokia 6 cross the 250,000 mark on Chinese retail site JD.com

Image: JD.com
By
The Nokia 6, the first Android device from the Nokia brand’s current owner, HMD Global, has reportedly crossed 250,000 registrations on JD.com.
Given the popularity of the Nokia brand name even today, it’s hardly surprising that the device has garnered such interest. In terms of hardware, the device is underpowered in its price bracket. The phone is powered by a Snapdragon 430 chipset that’s supported by 4GB of RAM, after all.
Nokia does claim that the phone is exceptionally well-built for the price, offering up a body that’s machined from ‘6,000 series aluminium’, the same that Apple has used in its phones. The phone is listed at a price of 1,699 CNY (around Rs 17,000) in China and will not be available outside that country any time soon.
Recent leaks, however, suggest that the company is working on a flagship smartphone with flagship specs which it will likely unveil at MWC 2017 in Spain next month. This phone, dubbed the Nokia 8, is expected to feature a Snapdragon 835, 6GB of RAM, up to 128GB of onboard storage and a 24MP rear camera.
Since it is debuting at MWC, we expect that at least this device will see a global launch.

Nokia 6: Leaked images from Chinese certification site show off a silver coloured variant of the device

Nokia 6: Leaked images from Chinese certification site show off a silver coloured variant of the device

By
Nokia 6, the first, true, Android-powered Nokia smartphone will soon be available in silver, suggests a listing on Chinese certification site Tenaa.
The device has already gone on sale in China at an approximate price of Rs 17,000, but only in black. This latest listing suggests that the device is identical to its black counterpart, differing only in colour.
The Nokia 6 is the first Nokia-branded, Android-powered phone built by HMD Global, which recently acquired the rights to the Nokia brand name. The device boasts of a 5.5-inch Full HD display with 2.5D Gorilla Glass. A Snapdragon 430 and 4GB of RAM provide the necessary processing power. Internal storage is fixed at 64GB, but it can be expanded via a microSD card.

The phone runs Android 7.0 Nougat by default.
The camera system includes a 16MP rear camera and an 8MP front camera. The battery is a 3,000 mAh unit.
HMD claims that it’s built the phones using 6000 series aluminium, making it very strong.
The phone will sell in China as a JD.com exclusive and the black version will start shipping on the eleventh of this month.

Nokia’s ‘Viki’ digital assistant will take on Google Assistant, Siri and Alexa in the near future

Nokia’s ‘Viki’ digital assistant will take on Google Assistant, Siri and Alexa in the near future

Image: Weibo
By
It certainly looks like the future of the smartphone is the digital assistant. The space is currently ruled by Google Now and Siri. Alexa and Cortana aren’t far behind either. Joining the fray, possibly, is Nokia’s own assistant and this one’s called Viki.
Google Assistant is an evolution of Google Now, but isn’t available on many devices yet.
GSMInfo.nl spotted Viki in a trademark filing made by Nokia. The trademark application was for the name Viki, and describes a software for “the creation and monitoring of mobile and web assistants working with digital knowledge and combining all data sources into a single chat and voice-based interface.”
Nokia, which recently revived its brand with the launch of the Android powered Nokia 6 in China, seems to have its heart in the right place. Samsung is also aware of the impending, AI-powered future and has been working on its own digital assistants for a while now (dubbed Bixby and Kestra).
As far as we’re aware, Viki is still only a name on a trademark application and we don’t even know the work that has been done on this AI.
There is also no timeline on if and when Viki will make its way to Nokia’s devices.

Nokia sues Apple in US and Germany for infringing patents

Nokia sues Apple in US and Germany for infringing patents

By
Nokia has announced that it has registered several complaints in the US and Germany against Apple. Nokia is alleging that Apple is infringing on a number of patents owned by Nokia. Nokia has three valuable patent portfolios that are commonly used in various consumer electronics such as tablets, mobile phones and personalCOMPUTERS.
Nokia has invested EUR 115 billion (roughly Rs 8 lakh crore) in research and development over a course of twenty years in the industry, with tens of thousands of patents to its name. Nokia also owns the patents of Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN). Nokia acquired Alcatel-Lucent in mid 2016 and bought out NSN in 2016.
“Through our sustained investment in research and development, Nokia has created or contributed to many of the fundamental technologies used in today’s mobile devices, including Apple products. After several years of negotiations trying to reach agreement to cover Apple’s use of these patents, we are now taking action to defend our rights,” said Ilkka Rahnasto, head of Patent Business at Nokia.
This is not the first time that Nokia has sued Apple. In fact, Nokia alleging patent infringement by Apple was the first salvo fired in the smartphone patent wars, in 2009. Apple countersued, and Nokia sued Apple over infringements of additional patents in 2009 itself. In 2011, Apple and Nokia agreed on a settlement. Nokia claims Apple has declined to license several other patents it uses since the 2011 agreement.
MobileLawsuits14
Nokia has registered the complaints in Regional Courts in Dusseldorf, Mannheim and Munich in Germany and the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas in the US. Nokia alleges infringement of 32 patents covering the display, user interface, software, the antenna, chipsets and video encoding. Nokia has said that it is in the process of filling complaints in other jurisdictions as well.

Nokia C1 renders and specifications leak: Expect a Snapdragon 830, 4GB RAM and dual-cameras

Nokia C1 renders and specifications leak: Expect a Snapdragon 830, 4GB RAM and dual-cameras

Image: Weibo
By
Everyone’s eyes will on the Nokia stage this year, as the company has scheduled a keynote at the Mobile World Congress, which takes place early next year in Barcelona, Spain. While it has not been confirmed as to what Nokia CEO, Rajeev Suri will announce, there are plenty of Nokia smartphone renders that have begun to surface online, hinting that Nokia may be planning a comeback to the smartphone space, but with Android inside.
new leak comes from a Weibo user, who hints at a Nokia C1 smartphone, which appears to be a flagship through and through. The leaked handset showcases a design language that looks quite similar to the chocolate bar flagship handsets that are on sale today that sport the usual rounded corners and an all-metal unibody build. The Nokia C1 pictured in these leaked images seems to feature a metal design, but with replaceable backs that appear to be made of different materials and textures.

The  design has rounded corners and an overall broad profile, along with a slim waistline.

On the front, the display takes up the major part of the front face, leaving thin bezels on the left and the right sides. At the top and bottom the bezels get a little thicker and while the top seems to be packed with sensors, a front facing camera and a speaker, the bottom too features a similar sized cutout for a second speaker.

Moving to the back, we find the Oreo shaped rear camera that has become the norm with flagships in the Lumia series (powered by Windows Phone). This unit however sits flush with the surface and features a dual camera setup with a triple LED flash and a xenon flash with a focus assist lamp next to it.
The right side features the power button at the top and a camera/shutter button closer to the bottom end. The left side features a volume rocker with two buttons. The bottom features a 3.5mm headphone jack along with a USB Type-C port.

As for the leaked specifications, the slides mention that the Nokia C1 will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 830 chipset (we guess this is an 835) with 4GB RAM. There will be 32GB, 64GB and 128GB internal storage options and the device will draw power from a 3,210 mAh battery. The same slide also points out that the device will feature Android 7.1.1 out of the box.
If these renders (obtained from a video) do turn out to be genuine, Nokia could have quite a contender for next year’s flagship space. Add to this the trust worthy Nokia brand name along with Google’s Android, and it seems like the perfect mix.
