Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe Night Edition announced with added exclusivity

For those who like the stretched-comfort of the Mercedes-Benz S Class coupe but somehow don’t find it all that exclusive, there is now a better option that will give them just that. Mercedes-Benz has now announced a variant of its S-Class Coupe called the Night Edition and as you may have guessed it, it adds some nice black touches and brings along a certain level of exclusivity as well.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe “Night Edition” will see its official premiere at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show, that takes place in January 2017. It will first be available in the European market in April 2017 followed by the US and other countries in August 2017. It will also come in three flavours, a S 400 4MATIC Coupé, S 500 Coupé and S 500 4MATIC Coupé with effect from 9 January 2017.

The speciality of this Coupe begins from the the outside with some very special exterior equipment in the form of a distinctive radiator grille that comes in a high-gloss black finish. Add to this 20-inch AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheels that are exclusive just to this Night Edition model feature a high-sheen rim flange. You also get side sills that are once again finished in high-gloss black.

As you may have noticed there are some similarities to the Mercedes AMG models. That would be the front and rear aprons with AMG styling that come as a standard. The new matter-finish paint shade selenite grey magno is also available as an option. Inside there’s plenty of nappa leather options in black/black or other options to suit the car’s exterior.

The S 400 4MATIC Coupe packs in a 2996cc V6 engine with 367hp and a peak torque of 500Nm. Next up is the brawnier S 500 Coupe that features a 455hp 4663cc V8 layout deliver 700Nm of torque. Lastly, there’s S 500 4MATIC Coupe with a 4663cc V8 engine that churns out 455hp and 700Nm of peak torque. The top of the line S 500 4MATIC Coupe accelerates from 0-100km/h in 4.6 seconds.

Remember the controversial self-driving advertisement that Mercedes released which got pulled down for misguiding viewers? Well, this time its the vehicle that is being pulled down (or rather pulling itself down), after Mercedes-Benz discovered a flaw in the new E-Class model’s wiring that leads to a stalled car when someone sits at that perfect spot on the back seat.

Car and Driver reported citing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) which claimed that the early builds of the 2017 E300 and E300 4MATIC sedan have an engine stalling problem if a passenger sits at a particular area of the rear seat.

As per Jalopnik, this does not apply to every 2017 E-Class model, but just the vehicles built from Dec. 10, 2015 to June 30, 2016, which have the wiring below the rear seats. When pressure is applied to the rear seat, the fuel pump, fuel-tank pressure sensor and fuel gauge get pressed down, which cuts off the supply of fuel to the engine, shutting it it in the process.

Car and Driver states that a total of 6858 cars have a wiring harness mounted under the rear-seat bench. Lucky for Mercedes-Benz, 3,100 of the affected vehicles are yet to be sold. For the unlucky owners who have yet to discover the issue, dealers have figured out a way to reroute the wiring so its more of quick fix than a complete overhaul.

While the 2017 E-Class has yet to make it to India, the new E-Class sedan has been launched elsewhere. And as with every new E-Class model, there are a whole bunch of variants.

This time, thanks to the modular rear-wheel-drive (MRA) platform, we can expect better variety of cars globally. After the E-Class L which was a long-body version of the E-Class launched for China, there is now another coupe version which was spied upon during testing.

This would be what Motor Authority calls the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe. Considering that Mercedes is testing a coupe version of the E-Class, an open top convertible and high-performance options are also expected.
