Apple updates its software with patches for critical security vulnerabilities; update now

Apple updates its software with patches for critical security vulnerabilities; update now

By
Yesterday’s Apple iOS 10.2.1 does not add any fancy new features to your phone, but it does patch over a dozen major vulnerabilities in the OS. Some of these vulnerabilities will allow hackers full access to your iOS device.
Some of these vulnerabilities, listed here, can allow an application to “execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges”. This is geek-speak for “your phone can be comprehensively hacked”.
As a Malwarebytes security analyst points out to Wired, these vulnerabilities will let hackers “add files, delete files or execute any actions.” Many of these vulnerabilities affect WebKit as well, which is the default rendering engine used by iOS. This means that any application that uses WebKit on iOS (which is a lot) is vulnerable.
Wired does add that most of these vulnerabilities are too obscure and hard to find for the regular hacker.
It’s not just iOS devices that are vulnerable, however; Apple has released updates for macOS, tvOS and watchOS as well. All of these updates include various security patches. The macOS update also includes a patch for the Safari browser caching bug that lost the MacBook Pro its first ‘recommended’ badge from Consumer Reports.
Obviously, you’d better make sure that all your Apple devices are updated if you want  to stay completely safe and secure.

App Review: Enpass, an extremely versatile password manager with extensive cross-platform support

password manager apps reviews
password manager apps

By Rehan Hooda / 03 Dec 2016 , 11:05

Mobile apps are the cornerstone of the smartphone experience, regardless of the platform that one may use. There has been a lot of talk about the whole moving away from apps to services model with the focus on different type of interactions with machines, AI and services with the imminent arrival of bots. But, bots and the full AI experience as portrayed by HAL 9000 in Space Odyssey or Jarvis in Iron Man still seems a distant dream. Apps, manual input of content and effort will still be around until AI services are improved and self-contained with privacy instead of current ‘need to send everything to a server to make sense.’
Cybersecurity1
To begin with, a lot of development has been happening around cyber security. Specially with demonetisation and lot of people moving online for their banking needs, the need to have secure passwords is pertinent. We have seen that despite numerous reports, instructions and advice by experts and services about the need to create a solid password, majority of the passwords are either ‘Password’ or ‘12345’. Thankfully most services which value consumer data security and privacy have mandatory instructions about the number of lower case characters, upper case characters, numbers and special characters should be added to a password.

As the number of digital services increase, the number of passwords and sensitive details like the backup security answers or password recovery code needs to be store also increases. Which the increasing amount of data, the need for password wallets or password managers is paramount. Enpass comes to fit the space brilliantly well.
I have been using the app since last 2-3 years and have seen it all, right from rebranding of the UI to republishing the Android app. Enpass is brilliant in every way and has grown with each update. The app is available on a wide range of platforms including iOS, Android, Blackberry, Windows UWP, MacOS, Windows PC, Linux and Chromebook along with a portable pen drive version. The company has also added support for Android Watch and it can be enabled in the Android Watch menu under settings in the Android app.
The app is free to download, however, the mobile apps, for iOS, Android and Blackberry, the company has put a restriction on the number of saved passwords that one can see. The free mobile version of the app only allows users to use and see 20 passwords in your database and beyond that you will need to purchase the app.
Enpass Password Manager Setup
Enpass includes a powerful password generator which lets you generate passwords and save them. It also allows you to tweak the ‘Recipe’ of the password to add in digits, symbols and characters. The app developer has added fingerprint API support for Android and TouchID support for iOS along with an Enpass keyboard for Android where you can authenticate and enter login details in any app using the autofill of the keyboard. Also, the company has added ‘tap to enter login details’ in the app. This feature dubbed as ‘Enpass Autofill Service’ uses the Android Accessibility feature and gives you a ‘Tap to fill’ notification in the notification drawer.
Enpass Password Manager Setup
While adding a new password, it will ask you to select the category of the password where the app provides a template for the data that you can store. You can change the icon of the password to match your service and also add new Field or reorder fields according to your preference.
The exception system of the app is a combination of open source and proprietary code to maximize the security. AES-256 is an industrial standard used by military and 24,000 rounds of PBKDF2 provides users advanced protection against brute force and side channel attacks.
Enpass Password Manager Setup
The app comes with a built-in browser where you can browse the web and Enpass takes care of all the passwords you will use on the internet. The app gives the option to change the User Agent String in the app along with the search engine of the browser. You can open the app and copy passwords and paste them on other apps, but also adds an option to clear the clipboard after specified time.
Enpass Password Manager Setup
Security and Browser options in Settings menu
The most important feature of the app and which I love is the app gives you an option to store the data file on the cloud service of your liking and nothing is stored on Enpass servers. All the data is encrypted with 256-bit AES encryption with 24,000 rounds of PBKDF2 and open-source SQLCipher encryption engine. You can store it on your Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Box, Folder or WebDAV or ownCloud. Before you start, you are required to set a Master Password which will be used to unlock the encrypted data file. Once set and running, you can set a pin code or fingerprint under the security section.
Even though the app is overall solid and the developer issues updated regularly to introduce new features and fix bugs, I wish that the Enpass Keyboard experience is improved to ensure that one doesn’t have to authenticate the app 2-3 times to enter two simple details.
Enpass Password Manager Setup
Restoring data after Install
Another important feature is the option to backup as well as restore the data over Wi-Fi, which means you can keep the data on a secure pen drive or hard drive and restore and backup the new passwords to the database to external storage or a secure private Wi-Fi. The app is free on desktop and costs $9.99 per platform and I have purchased it on all the mobile platforms that I use. Though $9.99 is slightly on steep side, the amount of functionality offered by the app does complete justice to the pricing.
Do let us know any apps worth recommending in the comments section below.

Microsoft has announced that it will be bringing the entire Visual Studio IDE to macOS this month

Visual Studio on mac

By
Microsoft has announced Visual Studio for Mac at the Connect(); conference this month.
For the first time in its history, Microsoft is bringing its Visual Studio development tool to the Mac. As Microsoft explains in its blog, “At its heart, Visual Studio for Mac is a macOS counterpart of the Windows version of Visual Studio.” The IDE (Integrated Development Environment) is designed to feel familiar to a macOS user, while still offering the cross-platform and cloud-based development capabilities of its Windows counterpart.
This IDE will reside alongside Visual Studio Code for macOS, which is a stand-alone, cross-platform text editor for developers.
Microsoft’s sudden interest in cross-platform development seems to stem from a deeper desire to connect with developers, regardless of their OS of choice, and offer them a common, connected platform to work on.
Microsoft has shown tremendous interest in cross-platform development this year, notably with their acquisition of Xamarin. Xamarin started out as a cross-platform development tool for developing iOS, Android, Windows and Mac apps. With its acquisition, Microsoft integrated its workflows into Visual Studio itself.
As TechCrunch suggests, Microsoft has realised that the future depends on cloud-based tools and services like Azure and that’s also where the company is making its money. If more developers start using Visual Studio, more developers will inevitably start using Microsoft’s Azure cloud services.
For developers, this is a win-win anyway.

Apple issues a major refresh to its MacBook Pro lineup with Touch Bar and Touch ID in keyboard

Apple issues a major refresh to its MacBook Pro lineup with Touch Bar and Touch ID in keyboard

Apple’s high-end Mac laptops are getting a touch control strip above the keyboard, part of a long-awaited update aimed at reviving interest in a product often overshadowed by newer gadgets like the iPad and iPhone.
The new Touch Bar, which is both a narrow display and a control panel, replaces the old physical function keys on a traditional laptop. It will offer a variety of controls that change according to the app or website that’s open. It also has functions that will be familiar to many iPhone users – showing word suggestions as you type, for example, or letting you scroll through a library of emojis.
New features, higher price
The company unveiled the laptops at its headquarters in Cupertino, California, where executives showed how the Touch Bar works with a variety of apps and software – providing playback and editing controls for videos or music, for example, and search functions for Apple’s maps and photos apps. Apple is also opening the Touch Bar to work with outside software, including Adobe’s Photoshop editing program and Microsoft’s Word, PowerPoint and Skype.
Along with faster processors and brighter screens, two of Apple’s new laptops will also get a fingerprint sensor, similar to the one on iPhones. The sensor can unlock the device, authorize software installations or recognize a different user and quickly switch to that person’s settings. It works with Apple Pay, so users can authorize an

How to maximize using Siri in macOS Sierra

Siri on a Mac is one of those seemingly innocuous features that can change the way you work. Learn tricks for making the most of the macOS Sierra integration.

By Erik Eckel | October 13, 2016, 8:14 AM PST

When I first heard Apple was bringing Siri to the Mac, I didn't believe the enhancement would prove that useful. But, properly wielded, Siri proves to be a surprisingly helpful feature. The trick is to know Siri's desktop and laptop capabilities, as well as the feature's limitations.
Understand Siri's constraints

Don't ask Siri to close an application. She can't—she's not allowed. She'll offer a quick apology, and that's all you get. And, it makes sense—I'm confident Apple precluded the ability for fear of losing unsaved data or accidentally closing an application in the middle of a critical process.

You also shouldn't try using Siri in noisy environments because, odds are, she's not going to be able to understand your commands—and, you'll look a little strange talking in public to your computer. But when you're in the privacy of your office or another quiet location where the audio won't prove disruptive to others, Siri will pause background programming long enough to provide a fair shot at speaking commands.

I don't recommend leveraging Siri to perform complex tasks, such as editing photos, editing spreadsheets or documents, or composing presentations. It's all about possessing accurate expectations.

Follow these tips and tricks for using Siri

Several options exist for summoning Siri. By default, you can press and hold the Command and Space keys. Or, you can click the Siri icon macOS Sierra Places, by default, within the Dock. Or, you can click the Siri icon from the Mac's menu bar. You can also

Spotify users exposed to malware attack

By Shawn Knight on October 6, 2016, 11:30 AM

Some users of Spotify’s free, ad-supported service got a bit more than they bargained for this week (and not in a good way).

Reports surfaced as early as Tuesday that Spotify’s free tier was serving up malicious content through its advertisements. According to one user’s account, if Spotify was open, it would continuously open the default web browser and load various malware / virus-ridden sites – some of which didn’t even require any user interaction to cause harm.

Worse yet, the issue apparently wasn’t limited to Windows as reports flowed in of similar behavior on both Linux and MacOS installations.

Shortly after the outbreak, Spotify said in response to one of the community posts that they had identified an issue where a small number of users were experiencing a problem with questionable website pop-ups in their default browsers as a result of an isolated issue with an ad on their free tier. The source of the problem was identified and has been shut down, the Spotify rep said.

While it’s not uncommon for malware to sneak into the advertising campaign of a major company, it is a bit embarrassing for Spotify as this isn’t the first time the company has dealt with such an issue. In 2011, Spotify issued a public apology after its Windows desktop app was found to be installing bogus “Windows Recovery” software which, again, was a result of malvertising.

Apple is expected to refresh MacBook Pro at the end of this month

By
Apple is expected to refresh MacBook Pro according to reports by PetaPixel. This refresh will be the first significant overhaul of Apple’s MacBook Pro laptop lineup in last four years as reported by Bloomberg. There have been numerous rumours about Apple expected to refresh Apple MacBook Pro at the end of this month with no concrete evidence. Earlier rumours stated that the refresh is slated for late 2016, after the Apple iPhone 7 event.
Some of the reports point to an imminent early October release while others point to an end of October release. According to MacRumours, the launch date for the updated version will be after 7 October as the company is aiming to

How to Use Siri on Your Mac: A Quick Start Guide

Apple’s intelligent personal assistant Siri has (finally) made the jump to Mac, courtesy of the macOS 10.12 Sierra update. The update brings most of the features iOS users have had for years to the desktop, with a few caveats.5 Reasons to Install macOS Sierra Right Now & How to Upgrade 5 Reasons to Install macOS Sierra Right Now & How to UpgradeAfter a few months of public beta, the latest version of Apple's desktop operating system is ready for prime time.READ MORE
Controlling your Mac with your voice has never been easier. Here’s what you can do, and how to personalize the experience.

Hear the Voice

You’re asked to activate Siri during the macOS Sierra setup process. You can do this later by visitingSystem Preferences > Siri. On this screen, you can configure some things about how Siri works, including the default language and voice.
Siri Settings on macOS Sierra
Siri on Mac is available in many languages, including multiple versions of Chinese, English, and Spanish. In the United States, most are familiar with the American female voice. You can change this to an American male voice, a male/female Australian and British voice, plus female versions of Irish and South African English voices. Each accent changes the general Siri experience on Mac. Play around with these to find the one that best suits your needs.Voice of Siri Susan Bennett Tells MakeUseOf How Siri Changed Her Life Voice of Siri Susan Bennett Tells MakeUseOf How Siri Changed Her LifeAt the forefront of Apple's original caring, often funny voice-powered assistant is a voice recognized the world over. Unlike Siri on iOS, Apple’s voice assistant on Mac doesn’t respond when you say “Hey Siri”. Instead, to begin a query, click the Siri icon in the Mac dock or menubar in the top-right of the screen. You can also set up a keyboard shortcut.
Under System Preferences you’ll find the following options:
  • Voice feedback — With this setting on, Siri responds to queries with a voice and by text. With this setting off, responses arrive through text only.
  • Mic input — If you have external microphones, you can use this setting to select it.
  • Keyboard shortcut — You can use any keyboard combination to activate Siri, withCommand+ Space being the default. You can also select from Option + Space and Function + Space. You can create different shortcuts by selecting Customize.

About Siri and Security

In macOS Sierra, Apple provides a lengthy security statement on Siri. Located on the Siri Settings page under “Siri and Privacy,” the report explains how Apple analyzes Siri queries. You should read this statement, especially as it relates to how Siri handles questions relating to Mac documents.Siri Is Listening: Has iOS Privacy Been Blown Open? Siri Is Listening: Has iOS Privacy Been Blown Open?Apple's has been accused of recording everything - absolutely everything - you say to Siri, and passing it to a third-party. On this point, Apple notes:
When you use Siri to search for your documents, the Siri request is sent to Apple, but the names and the content of your documents are not sent to Apple. The search is performed locally on the Mac.
You can learn more about how Cupertino handles privacy on the Apple website.
Siri on Mac offers a lot of useful features, even as a first generation release. These features fall into two broad categories, which we’ll call workflow and entertainment.

Let’s Get to Work

One of the main reasons to use Siri on your Mac is to improve and speed up your workflow. Central to this is Siri’s broad search capabilities. By just asking a question, Siri can find any document that resides on your Mac.Ditch The Dock To Speed Up Your Mac Workflow Ditch The Dock To Speed Up Your Mac WorkflowWhile the dock can't be entirely eliminated, there are many powerful alternatives that can reduce your dependence on using the dock as an app launcher.READ MORE

Finding Your Files

For example, you need to find a file with “2015” in the title. You don’t know the location of the file or its full file name. Before the arrival of Siri, you would type “2015” into Spotlight and hope for the best. With Siri, search becomes more efficient and yes, personal.
In our example, we could ask Siri:
  • “Show me all files with ‘2015’ in the title.”
  • “Show me files with ‘2015’ in the title, opened in 2016.”
  • “Show me all records with ‘2015’ in the title, located in the Desktop folder.”
Do you use Dropbox or OneDrive? As long as a folder is accessible from your Mac, Siri can search through it, even when those are remote files.

Siri Loves Photos

Enjoy snapping photos? Siri can search for images with ease thanks to new tagging features in Photos for Mac in macOS Sierra. You can also use Siri to find images from the web.
Siri Find Photos of Sunset on the Web
For example, you could ask Siri:
  • “Find photos from July 2014.”
  • “Find pictures of a sunset on the web.”
  • “Show me the NBC logo.”
  • “Find my photos from the beach.”
  • “Show me photos with Jon.”
Of course, for that last one to work you’ll need to open up Photos and label “Jon” under the newPeople album.

Conversions and Sums

Need to find a percentage quickly? Want to multiply two large numbers? Wondering how many feet are in 9 metres? Making a purchase overseas and wondering what it’ll cost in your local currency. These are all supported by Siri, simply ask:
  • “What’s 17% of 350?”
  • “How much is 45 multiplied by 300?”
  • “How many miles is 75 kilometers?”
  • “What is 500 US dollars in Australian dollars?”

Composing Documents

You can also create documents with Siri on Mac. To do so, start with a command such as “Send John a text” or “Send John an email”. From there, Siri will prompt you to compose the message using your voice.
Siri Mac Messages
When completed, Siri sends the message automatically. You can also use Siri to compose tweets, Facebook posts, and more. You cannot write documents in applications like Pages and Word with Siri. In this release, Siri cannot work with any third-party applications, unlike its iOS counterpart.
You could always try composing documents and longer passages with your Mac’s dictation feature though. Can You Write A Whole Article Using Voice Dictation on the Mac? Drag and Drop

Images, files, and other information Siri finds are easy to add to a folder. Just drag the results right to a window on your Desktop. Better still, you can pull images found on the web into Mac applications such as Pages and Numbers.

Free Space and Battery

Siri is also very good at finding critical information about your Mac, including free space and battery percentage.Calibrate & Maintain Your MacBook Battery For Best Performance Calibrate & Maintain Your MacBook Battery For Best PerformanceIf you correctly calibrate and maintain your MacBook battery, it's possible to improve performance and put off replacing it for as long as possible.READ MORE
To find this information, simply ask Siri:
  • “How much free space do I have?”
  • “How much battery do I have left?”
Whether it’s helping you compose a message or helping you find a relevant file, Siri on Mac has you covered.

The Fun Stuff

Your Mac likes to have fun too, and so does Siri. At launch, the voice assistant already knows a lot about the outside world, including sports news, Twitter results, weather, and more. Among the commands to try:
  • “What’s happening in the world?”
  • “What’s the weather in New York City?”
  • “Did the Boston Red Sox win yesterday?”
  • “What’s the latest from Twitter?”
Depending on your question, you can pin the results to Notification Center. By doing so, everything about that topic stays up to date. To pin an item, click on the “+” button at the top right of the Siri query result.
Sports Game Summary Siri on Mac
For example, the question “When do the New England Patriots play next” offers the results you see above. The Siri box contains information on the next two football games, including a score, when applicable. Notice that it also features the + button to pin this information to your Mac’s Notification Center.
To pin the entire future schedule of your favorite sports team, tell Siri something like, “New England Patriots schedule for 2016”.
Siri Find Cinema Movies Playing
There are a few more entertainment-related commands to get you started with Siri.
  • “What’s on at the cinema?”
  • “How many miles to Columbus, OH?”
  • “How many days until Thanksgiving?”
Siri on Mac is packed full of beneficial features even on day one. Just imagine what the future holds in future macOS releases.

5 Reasons to Install macOS Sierra Right Now & How to Upgrade

It’s been a few years since we’ve seen a release that featured any truly new features, and Sierra doesn’t do a whole lot to buck the trend. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t upgrade. You definitely should if you use iOS or have an Apple Watch (CAUK).
So here’s why you should upgrade, how to upgrade, and how to save the installer for use on any other Macs.

At Last: Siri on the Mac

It seems odd that Apple has waited so long to bring their smart assistant to desktop users, but that’s exactly what macOS Sierra does. Apple users have long had a degree of voice control for their Macs, including dictation features, but Siri is a real step forward. The voice-powered assistant will do just about anything the iOS counterpart can, with the exception of interacting with third-party apps.
Siri on MacOS
After you’ve installed Sierra you’ll get an option to enable Siri, after which you’ll be able to trigger the feature by clicking the icon in the dock, or in your Mac menu bar. By default, you can also activate Siri by holding down Command + Space, a keyboard shortcut you can reconfigure under Settings > Siri.
Use Siri as you would Spotlight — for finding files, for converting currency or performing simple sums, for checking the weather, and more. Siri can find you images on the web, or find images you have taken yourself. You can even pin certain results to Notification Center by clicking the plus + logo that appears in the result window.

Share Your iOS & macOS Clipboard

One of the best features for iPhone and iPad users running iOS 10 is the new Universal Clipboard feature. Make sure you’re logged in to the same iCloud account on any iOS devices and your Mac, and have Handoff enabled on both devices. It uses Continuity so relies on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to do the heavy lifting, and nothing is sent to Apple’s servers (transfers take place locally).
Text works instantly: copy something on your iPad and paste it on your Mac. Images take a little more work, as you can’t simply “paste” an image into Finder. Instead you’ll need to paste into an app like Preview via the File > New from Clipboard menu bar option.
Handoff Settings in MacOS Sierra
To disable the feature, you’ll need to disable Handoff entirely, which allows you to quickly fetch active tabs, unfinished email, third party features like notes in Evernote on other devices. Head to Settings > General > Handoff on iOS, or System Preferences > General > Allow Handoff to disable the feature entirely.

Better Search & Photo Organization

Just like iOS 10, macOS Sierra’s Photos app is smarter and can identify objects, faces, scenes, and sort images by location. When you first launch Photos after upgrading to Sierra, it will begin to scan your library to identify and sort your images. This process can take some time (it took over 12 hours on my iPhone 6).
Photos Scanned in MacOS Sierra
Once Photos has completed its initial scan, your photos are far more searchable than they had been before. A new album for People will appear, and you can assign each face to a contact for better organization. You can search for places like “beach,” objects like “coffee,” animals like “cat” and anything else you’re looking for.

More Storage Management Options

If you’ve got a MacBook with a small SSD, you’ll be delighted with the new Storage Managementinterface which provides a few options for making the most of the space you’ve got. There’s an option to put all your files and photos in iCloud, and only keep your recently opened files and optimized photos locally on your Mac.
Storage Management in MacOS Sierra
Another option called Optimize Storage allows you to automatically remove iTunes films and TV shows from your Mac after watching them. You can also automatically empty the trash every 30-days, and an option to Reduce Clutter helps you find large files that you rarely access and clean them up.
The Storage Management app also tells you how much space applications like GarageBand and Mail are using. Anecdotally, I noticed that macOS Sierra left me with around an additional 30 GB of free disk space after the install, which doesn’t include the 5 GB occupied by the installer.

Unlock With Apple Watch

Head to System Preferences > Security and Privacy and click on the padlock, then input your password. You can now check the option to allow your Apple Watch to unlock your Mac automatically. Whenever you’re within range and you wake your Mac up, it will unlock automatically from now on.
Just like Universal Clipboard, Apple Watch relies on Continuity so you’ll have to have Handoff enabled under Settings > General > Handoff for it to work.

And the Rest

There are of course a bunch of other improvements, including:
  • A better Apple Music experience, though technically this is part of the latest iTunes update (but it’s out now, so knock yourselves out).
  • Messages can now display all of the new iOS 10 iMessage tricks, like full screen decorations and bubble effects. You can’t send these effects, but you’ll get new emoji that’s three times bigger than it was previously.
  • You can now pay for purchases on support websites with Apple Pay. Simply flash your phone when prompted, as you would any other purchase.
  • New wallpapers — and who doesn’t love Apple’s wallpapers?
  • Sierra also includes the usual security updates and under-the-hood tweaks, which is good news for everyone.

Installing macOS Sierra

I can’t stress this enough: back up your Mac before you install! Operating system upgrades can fail, putting you in a position where you need to reinstall the operating system entirely. Connect a spare USB drive and run Time Machine or use a third-party backup solution if you want.5 Local Mac Backup Solutions That Aren't Time Machine 5 Local Mac Backup Solutions That Aren't Time MachineThere are lots of Mac backup options out there, and many of them have features that Apple's default backup app just can't compete with.READ MORE
You’ll also want to make sure you have enough free space to install the upgrade. Apple recommends 8 GB of free space, but you could push this a little further for peace of mind. If you have any essential third-party apps then you might want to check they work with Sierra before you upgrade by visiting the developer’s website. Last of all, consider making a bootable USB installation just in case things go very wrong.
MacOS Sierra App Store
Next download macOS Sierra using the Mac App Store. It’s currently found on the Featured tab, or you can simply search for it. The download size is around 4.7 GB, and the install procedure will take around 30 minutes to an hour.
Note: If you have multiple Mac computers, you can save the installer so that you don’t have to download it more than once. Simply copy the “Install macOS Sierra” application from your Applications folder to a removable drive. You can’t save the file after you’ve upgraded, as the installer deletes this file on completion.
Installation Prompt of MacOS Sierra
To begin the installation procedure, launch the Install macOS Sierra application and follow the instructions. When you restart into Sierra you’ll have to enter your iCloud password, and complete the setup. Your computer may be a bit slow until it has been optimized for use with the new software, and you may encounter a few problems with existing apps until they are updated.
