Xiaomi, a company that’s already valued at over $45 billion, is now targeting $14.5 billion in revenue in 2017.
While this figure does seem quite small in comparison to companies like Apple (which made around $45 billion per quarter last year), it’s an ambitious figure for a startup like Xiaomi. In fact, Xiaomi is already considered to be one of the world’s most valuable startups. It was also rated as the third-largest smartphone maker in the world, after Samsung and Apple.
Bloomberg reports that Xiaomi’s founder and CEO Lei Jun laid out his goals for 2017, where he spoke of plans for increasing its offline network, expanding globally and focusing more on artificial intelligence and online finance.
The report also points out that Xiaomi’s initial success came from its online-only model, but that rivals soon caught on. Xiaomi is now looking to establish a better retail presence and plans to open more outlets.
Xiaomi is a startup that launched in April 2010. While the company is primarily known for its smartphones, it has a presence in the consumer electronics in general and sells everything from drones to smart rice cookers and electric bicycles.

The latest Facebook Live update will let you go live directly from your desktop

The latest Facebook Live update will let you go live directly from your desktop

To give publishers additional control and flexibility over their broadcasts, Facebook has rolled out a feature enabling users to go live through a web browser to Pages.
“A variety of broadcast types – like daily vlogs – benefit from an easy, stable camera setup, and bringing Live to laptops and desktops will make this style of broadcasting easier,” an official statement said on Wednesday.
The social networking giant also rolled out a “Live Contributor” role in Pages, allowing admins to designate specific individuals to go live on behalf of a Page.
“This gives contributors the flexibility to stream great live content from a mobile device on behalf of a Page whenever it happens, while allowing the Page admin to maintain security and control over their Page,” Facebook explained.
To better understand how their content performs, Facebook is rolling out video metrics in coming weeks to give insights to celebrities, journalists and politicians.
Available for profiles with 5,000 or more followers, these metrics will include total minutes viewed, total number of views, and total engagement — reactions, comments and shares. It will also display aggregate information over seven, 30 and 60-day periods.
Video insights for profiles will also be available in the Mentions app over the coming weeks.
Facebook is also rolling out an update that lets users highlight a comment by pinning it to their video.
For users who want to share the link of their live videos, Facebook rolled out a permalink that directs people to a Page’s video content.
Facebook recently introduced a series of crossposting features to help publishers reach audiences across different Pages.
However, in the latest update, Facebook has extended the capabilities, allowing a publisher to post the recorded video to multiple Pages at the same time.

Instagram Stories to now get advertisements in order to boost revenues

Instagram Stories to now get advertisements in order to boost revenues

Representational image
Facebook Inc’s Instagram is bringing more than 30 advertisers into one of its fastest-growing features, Instagram Stories, in a bid to boost advertising revenue, the company said on Wednesday.
The social media company will become a more important player in maintaining Facebook’s growth in advertising revenue in 2017. During the last two earnings calls, Facebook executives said they may soon reach a limit on the amount of ads they can place in front of users, which had been one of the key factors driving ad revenue growth.
Media buyers are optimistic about Instagram’s ability to maintain Facebook’s place, second only to Alphabet Inc’s Google, in the digital ad marketplace.
“Instagram could end up being as strong a revenue component for Facebook as YouTube has been for Google,” said Noah Mallin, head of social for North America at ad agency MEC.
In Instagram Stories, users and businesses can post a string of photos and videos that disappear after 24 hours. It launched in August and now has 150 million daily active users, according to Jim Squires, director of market operations for Instagram.
The new ad product will show full-screen ads intermittently as users swipe through photos and videos on Instagram Stories. The company is testing it with major advertisers including General Motors Co, Nike Inc and Airbnb, which is using it to promote its product Trips on Airbnb.
Time Warner Inc’s Turner Sports will test ads for cable network TNT’s airing of next month’s National Basketball Association All-Star Game in New Orleans.
Companies normally test new advertising products with a select group of advertisers to work out any kinks before a wide roll out.
According to eMarketer, 74 percent of US companies plan to use Instagram this year, up from 53 percent who used it for marketing in 2016. This level of use would allow Instagram to surpass Twitter.
“It’s definitely gained importance,” said Ian Schafer, founder and chairman of ad agency Deep Focus, who said he plans to spend more money with Instagram.
The past few months have seen Facebook admit to a variety of errors in how it has measured performance for brands that advertise on the platform. Buyers do not expect that to hurt Instagram’s efforts.
“They just have such a monopoly when it comes to attention that it’s difficult not to have to go that route,” said Victor Pineiro, senior vice president social media for digital agency Big Spaceship.

Yahoo hacks: European Union is not satisfied with US’ explanation regarding Yahoo email scanning orders

Yahoo hacks: European Union is not satisfied with US’ explanation regarding Yahoo email scanning orders

Image: Reuters
The United States has not satisfied the European Union’s concerns about Yahoo’s scanning of all customers’ incoming emails for US intelligence purposes, the bloc’s justice chief told Reuters in an interview.
The European Commission, the EU executive, asked the United States in November for clarifications on the secret court order served to Yahoo as part of its monitoring of a new transatlantic pact facilitating the exchange of personal data by businesses.
To clinch an agreement on the EU-US Privacy Shield, as the data transfer framework is known, Washington pledged not to engage in mass, indiscriminate surveillance.
That allayed Commission concerns for the privacy of Europeans’ data stored on US servers raised by disclosures of intrusive US surveillance programmes in 2013 by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden.
“I am not satisfied because to my taste the answer came relatively late and relatively general, and I will make clear at the first possible opportunity to the American side that this is not how we understand good, quick and full exchange of information,” EU Justice Commissioner Vera Jourova said in the interview.
While Yahoo is not signed up to the Privacy Shield and the scanning took place before the framework existed, the issue is a first test case of how the new system, which underpins $260 billion of trade in digital services, and the US commitments on spying work in practice, an EU official said.
The Privacy Shield allows businesses to seamlessly move Europeans’ personal data across the Atlantic, whether for completing credit card transactions, hotel bookings or analysing browsing habits to serve targeted ads, while complying with strict EU data protection rules.
“I understand that the American side, when it comes to national security issues, cannot be fully concrete,” Jourova said.
Nevertheless, she said, she still expects more detailed information on what happened and the reasons for which Yahoo was asked to scan customer emails.
Reuters reported in October that Yahoo scanned all incoming emails for a digital signature linked to a foreign state sponsor of terrorism at the behest of an order from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.
The Privacy Shield foresees an annual review to ensure the United States is abiding by its commitments and that the framework is effective. The first annual review will take place this summer, under now President-elect Donald Trump.
Jourova said she was not concerned by the incoming Trump administration but that she would closely monitor what he would do with the US government’s presidential policy directive on US surveillance activities and a newly established US ombudsperson office in the State Department to handle complaints from EU citizens about US spying.
“I would expect that Trump’s administration would understand what is good and what is bad for business. This is good for business,” she said, referring to the Privacy Shield.
“We need to see that we can still trust.”

Apple fixes battery life bug that cost the MacBook Pro a ‘recommended’ tag from Consumer Reports

Apple fixes battery life bug that cost the MacBook Pro a ‘recommended’ tag from Consumer Reports

By
The latest MacBook Pro from Apple has received a great deal of criticism for its lack of USB-A ports, smaller battery and limited RAM. Topping this criticism was a damning report from Consumer Reports, which cited inconsistent battery life as the reason for not giving the new MacBook Pro its ‘recommended’ tag.
In the course of its testing, Consumer Reports (CR) noted that the MacBook Pro’s battery life varied between under 5 hours to over 19 hours. This inconsistency failed to impress CR.
Apple, understandably puzzled by the widely varying results, approached CR to understand the test process and hunt out the cause for the variation in battery life.
Apple’s investigations unearthed a bug in Safari’s (the default browser on macOS) developer mode which affected the test results. The mode specifically disables the browser cache and is enabled by CR as part of its test process. Apple says that this mode is not used by the average consumer and hence, will not affect the average user.
Describing its test process, CR explains that it disables features like browser cache, automatic screen dimming, etc. to establish a reliable base line for battery performance. Following Apple’s findings, CR ran the tests again with caching off and found that battery life was now consistent.
Apple has since published a patch to fix the issue, but it’s currently only available to subscribers to Apple’s Beta program. The fix will be released to the general public sometime later as part of a larger software update for macOS, says Apple.
In a statement, Apple said, “This is the best pro notebook we’ve ever made, we respect Consumer Reports and we’re glad they decided to revisit their findings on the MacBook Pro.”
CR has promised to report its findings once it finishes retesting the MacBook Pro.
